It’s nice to know that the Vatican has its mind on serious matters as, in the week marking the fortieth anniversary of the break up of the Beatles, it finally forgives John Lennon for declaring, in 1966, that the band was “bigger than Jesus” .
At the weekend the Vatican newspaper, the Osservatore Romano, said that although Liverpool’s finest took drugs and hardly lived exemplary lives, they could be forgiven because of the beauty of their melodies “which changed pop music forever and still give us emotions, living on like precious jewels”. The paper also says that the band “remains the longest-lasting, most consistent and representative phenomenon in the history of pop music”.
Former Beatle Ringo Starr, however, is unimpressed, remembering that the group was once labelled “Satanic” by the Vatican. He adds that he thinks the Vatican “has more to talk about than the Beatles”. There has so far been no comment from Sir Paul McCartney. Life goes on…
Do you think the Vatican has made this gesture too late?
