Baggio boosts Zenga

Italy great Roberto Baggio on Wednesday praised former Azzurri teammate Walter Zenga for his work in coaching Serie A dark horse Catania.

Speaking at a new drive to use soccer to fight world hunger, Baggio said the ex-Inter Milan goalie was doing ''an excellent job'' at the Sicilian club which he saved from relegation last year.

Catania has started the season impressively with wins over more fancied sides like Atalanta and a draw at Juventus.

Ahead of Sunday's Sicilian derby against Palermo it lies in seventh place - but just two points behind joint leaders Lazio, Udinese and Inter.

Zenga was a surprise pick to salvage Catania's season last March, having had no previous Serie A managerial experience.

But the former manager of Red Star Belgrade and Dinamo Bucharest appears to have turned things round for the Sicilians, who have let in only four goals in six matches this term.

Zenga earned the nickname Spiderman for his acrobatic saves for Inter from 1982 to 1994 and for Italy from 1985 to 1992.

He set a record of five straight clean sheets at Italia 90, the tournament where Baggio became a star, but blotted his copy book by failing to snag the cross that allowed Argentina an equaliser in the semi-final.

The South Americans went on to win the match on penalties, knocking out the hot home favourites.
