It’s been months since the alarm first sounded on the drought that’s been ongoing in Italy since late last year, causing the government to declare a state of emergency in several northern regions. Conditions created by the lack of rainfall were worsened by this summer’s early and extreme heat waves throughout June, July and August. It was a historic drought, the likes of which haven’t been seen in 70 years.
