A Camorra informant on Wednesday denied telling police the Naples mob was planning to kill writer Roberto Saviano to get revenge for his bestselling expose' Gomorra.
Informant Carmine Schiavone, a relative of one of the bosses of the Casalesi clan, was widely reported Tuesday to have tipped off the police about the murder plot, supposedly to be carried out ''by Christmas''.
But Schiavone told the Naples Anti-Mafia Bureau Wednesday that he had ''never spoken of or even heard about'' such a plan, judicial sources said.
The bureau is investigating the leak of Schiavone's original claim.
Saviano said Wednesday he wants to leave Italy ''to get his life back''.
Public officials rallied to his side, announcing a drive to heighten protection and keep him in Italy.
