Directed by Oscar winner Gabriele Salvatores, “Italy in a Day” captures, as the title suggests, a day in the lives of ordinary Italians - specifically October 26, 2013 - from midnight to midnight.

The social filmmaking project was announced last October, when Salvatores, who won an Academy Award for best foreign language movie in 1991 for “Mediterraneo”, invited Italians to submit footage of their lives. More than 2,200 hours of images were submitted by over 40,000 people.

The result is an 84-minute film stitching together micro-moments in the lives of 600 ordinary citizens, all filmed on October 26, 2013.

“The thousands of videos I received gave me the image of a country that is suffering with dignity, and that is hopeful toward the future,” Salvatores said. “There is a sense of ‘tenderness’ toward life, toward humanity, which I found positive, as far as I’m concerned.”

The film, which is co-produced by Ridley Scott, premiered at the Venice Film Festival and will be screened at select theaters throughout Italy on September 23. It will then air on RAI television on September 27.
