(ANSA) - The managing director of Italy's rail company Trenitalia has been summoned to the transport ministry to explain a case in which lice were found crawling all over carriages in an Intercity train.
Junior Transport Minister Mario Tessone said offering compensation in the form of a free journey was "not enough." Tassone said he would urge Trenitalia CEO Roberto Testore to take urgent action to improve hygiene.
He said it was time to scrap old rolling stock liable to attract parasites and germs, and to boost cleaning activities.
"I believe that citizens have a sacrosanct right to travel safely, without risks and with all the guarantees of healthy conditions that are worthy of a civilised country."
