On the last Sunday in May, wineries throughout Italy will open their doors to the public. Cantine Aperte, or Open Cellars, is an event that unites wine lovers and producers.
The event began 19 years ago and has grown into a huge affair. Over 800 wineries participated in the last edition and welcomed a stunning one million oenophiles into their cellars. The movement was started to facilitate interaction between vintners and consumers and enable the wine lovers to connect with the origins of their favorite bottles.
Cantine Aperte was founded by wineries in the Wine Tourism Movement in Italy, but public response has been so positive that organizers are hoping to expand the day to other countries with similarly strong culinary traditions.
The 2011 event will take place on the 29th of May. For a schedule of open wineries and tour packages visit the Movimento Turismo di Vino website.
