10834 Self - build

I know from many of the threads that I have read that some of you have done a considerable amount of the work yourselves. Does anyone have any experience of self-building in Italy?
This is a wider question than merely issues arising about verifying the correct installation of the electrics and plumbing.

Are you talking about building (new-build) from scratch, or doing your own major restoration of a ruin? I have some experience of the latter in Italy, but none of the former!

The ruin that we are looking at has now collapsed so much that nothing other than a complete new build will do. Which does have some advantages on building costs and on the layout of rooms, window sizes and positions, etc., even though we will still be limited to working within the existing square metres.

This is also an interesting blog of a chap who was a builder in the UK and their experiences building a house in Italy. It highlights many of the do it yourself difficulties.

You could contact them and ask their opinion.
