or as they say the real vocabulary of the abruzzo language

a useful site for those that are struggling to understand what their neighbours might be saying although you have to be able to translate then from Italian... but it goes to show why many people you talk to here especially in the countryside and often of the older generation seem to talk an italian that does not make sense

its also used when they realise that you might only talk Italian to make a quick aside in private or a joke at your expense because they can switch to this dialect and speak it even quicker than Italian to make it almost unintelligible to an outsider...

anyway that's the link... although sometimes it might be better not to understand what they are saying... but if you come out with a word or two it does give them a bit of a surprise

The most interesting language particularity I have come accross is an "isola linguistica" at Colognora in the lucchese mountains between Collodi (Pinocchio's land) and Boveglio. They speak a language which comes from Longobard, although it is slowly disappearing; only elderly people speak it nowadays. Anyway, this particularity is marked by a road sign next to the entrance of the small town.

There must be more then one dialect in the region. Down south here it's a fiar big different then across the line in Molise. If that small distance leads to such a big change I bet the move up north is no less big.
