nursing home fees

I have been told that I may be liable to pay towards the nursing home fees of my mother-in-law, with dementia, in France. We have been estranged and out of touch for over 20 years. I have heard that I can be asked to pay. My income is low, just a small pension, and currently live in Italy. Does anyone know if the demand for contribution will come direct from France or via Italy's bureaucratic system and the limit of what I may be asked to pay or how to avoid it completely?

It is called "obligation alimentaire" and it does exist; however, it is not automatic, it depends on whether or not you are able to pay. No idea about how it is implemented. There will be information on google.fr
