I heard that Air One the Alitalia subsidiary are increasing internal and international flights. Has anyone any experience of flying with them? What are they like?

Just saw this report on a recent poll carried out in Italy. Thought it made interesting reading although the sample was quite small.Apparently, one out of four Italians are ashamed of their country and one out of two feel there is reason to be embarassed about Italy. Carried out by Renato Mannheimer's ISPO group on a cross section of 800 Italians, the poll found that 69% were proud to be Italian, 33% felt the state was something distant from them and 25% said they were ashamed to be Italian. Topping the list of reasons why one out of two Italians said there was cause to be embarassed were the country's politicians and mentality. Is this the influence of Mr. B or is it that he's probably not alone?

I see that Italy began experimenting with its first airport body scanner today at Fiuimicino. Personally I've no problem with anyone seeing my wobbly bits if it's doesn't involve taking off shoes, belt etc. and long queues. On that subject too does anyone know why I have to go through passport control in order to fly out of Italy to Ireland? Seems faintly ridiculous. And back on topic I thought the best joke I heard about the failed Christmas Day bomb attack on a transatlantic flight to Detroit was on The Daily Show. Host Jon Stewart was musing about having a bomb in your underpants. Imagine if the suicide bomber had been successful. There would have been 50 fairly disappointed virgins whenever he arrived in Heaven! What the...?

Here in Ireland getting married invalidates a will and you would have to sign a new one. Don't know about Italy though. Also it occurs to me that if you dies first your estate wouldn't simply pass to your partner. Rather your son would be entitled to a share as I understand it.

That's the joy of diversity! And it's great that we have the choice to click into them or ignore them as we please. My own view - wouldn't want the forum just to be about those (or even predominantly about those) but otherwise thought them a welcome light hearted diversion. What harm?

We were just talking at my Italian class last week about the Carnevale and I was interested to hear the differing versions of where the word comes from. It’s not disputed that the festival time is a pre-Lenten celebration probably with pagan origins. However there are differing versions as to where the word comes from. Our teacher had it that the name comes from the latin carne levare or similar, meaning "to remove meat", since meat is prohibited during Lent. However there were other suggestions and a quick look at Wikipedia (that reliable source!) has :-a) carne vale, which means "farewell to meat", signifying that those were the last days when one could eat meat before the fasting of Lent.b) carne vale as "a farewell to the flesh", a phrase embraced by certain carnival celebrations that encourage letting go of your former (or everyday) self and embracing the carefree nature of the festival.c) "Carrus Navalis" (ship cart), the name of the roman festival of Isis, where her image was carried to the sea-shore to bless the start of the sailing season. The festival consisted in a parade of masks following an adorned wooden boat, that would reflect the floats of modern carnivals.Wikipedia describes these as folk etymologies and are not supported by evidence.I’ve never been to the Carnevale in Venice or indeed elsewhere so can’t pass on any recommendations that way.

It has a handle so presumably it's carriedIt's copper so there might be heat involvedIt's not clear if it's hinged and even if it was the "folded over" part isn't big enough to cover the entire top so it's unlikely to be a bed warmer.Best guess - it's some sort of cooking pot - maybe a prototype fondue pan?

In that great (and very annoying) tradition of answering a question not asked I was just going to say that if she had a lot of luggage and didn't want to be lugging it around she could arrange an airport transfer to her final destination. Might suit too depending on when the flight is getting in.If she's heading to Pacentro (and I'm only being presumptious because of your name!) there is a chap in Sulmona who does it. Would probably cost about €200 though - a lot more than a taxi and coach - but you don't have the hassle or the waiting around. Depends on what her pocket can bear!
