I have often advocated swinging up through Belgium when travelling from UK to Italy, on the grounds of the cheap petrol in Luxembourg and toll free motorways. I did this route again a couple of weeks ago, but found the roadworks on the Dunkirk-Lil
I thought it might help people not break the law [or get caught breaking it] to some info on speed cameras they might come across in driving down to Italy. [This really applies to people like me who don’t have a sat-nav that tells them all the in
When driving to Italy, [Lake Maggiore area], from Calais, I almost always drive up towards Dunkirk and then head East towards Luxembourg. The reasons for doing so is simple:-
If you are driving down to Italy, this regularly updated AA site gives you the latest info on fuel prices across Europe. Its useful for deciding where to fill up. Note - in Luxembourg, [where I always fill up - its worth the minor detour from Cal

Are you having new tiles, or just re-using the old ones [if possible]? - that might cut the cost down
Obviously, cost depends on the area being re-roofedHad my place re-roofed in 2015, by a local man [always use local people, makes life much easier]---------------------------------------------Rough Area - 75 m2New tilesvapour/waterproof barrierInsulationnew purlins [cross beams over roof trusses]new boarding out of roof area before tilinglead flashing around 2 chimneys25m of new gutteringSome painting of exposed woodcost - about £9k Don't know if that helps
If you want cheap petrol - go Calais, dunkirk, Lille, [if short of petrol, there is a Le Clerk superstor/petrol place just off motorway before Lille,] Namur, Luxembourg, Metz - all good motorways and no tolls. petrol in Luxembourg is cheapest on your trip. Did this route 3 weeks ago [only marginally longer than yours with, but no delays for toll booths]You could then do Metz - Strasbourg as per your post, or [for free] Metz Nancy then Mulhouse or Colmar. Last bits are not dual carriageway, but are good roads over the mountains - no problems there.I always avoid Basle. Mulhouse on to German autobahn get the Vignette for Swiss motorway at first services you get to, then take the motorway to Lorrach - this avoids Basle and its traffic/delays. Straight into Switzerland and on to Gottard Tunnel Other option is Calais - Rheims, Dijon Besancon and into Switzerland that way, then around Lake Geneva and into Italy via the Simplon pass - nice easy route [my route with the Doggie on board]. Quicker, but tolls are paid in France
Italian company - Groupama - google them to find the one local to your house. I use them - pay by bank transfer from UK. No problems with them at all [yet]
Don't know any personally, but as a generalisation, I believe that any Italian priest under 30 years old will have learnt English whilst at school
Hugo, I suggest that you use the 'REPORT POST' button on my posting, and see if the Magazine people consider it as advertisingThere is no way I condone advertising on this website, and I will continue to 'Report' posts that I consider as advertising Alan
Hugo, I think you are confusing a 'recommendation' with an 'advert'.My response is purely a recommendation, in response to MrN's request of information from;-".... any of you with a holiday home (none rental) have any contacts in Italy."It is a recommendation because it is based upon my experiences with getting insurance for my holiday home in Italy, and most importantly, I have no link to the company that I recommend [Groupama] other than I use their insurance.Giving what I believe to be the address of the local office is just being 'helpful'. All MrsN would have needed to do, after I recommended Groupama, would be to 'Google' [another recommendation!] Groupama and Cosenza to get the adddress I posted.Alan
I use Groupama - I usually pay from UK by bank transfer, as I am only rarely at my Italian holiday home I think these are the details for your area;- GROUPAMA ASSICURAZIONI - SCRUTARI ASSICURAZIONI sas

Almost certain there will be snow around in Switzerland then - but they are pretty good at keeping things clear. This site may assisthttp://www.myswissalps.com/car/trafficinfoHowever, the risk of snow is why I wouldn't do the route over the muntains between Colmar and NancyDon't forget about the Vignette for the Swiss motorways - you can buy them in German autobahn services just before Basle [then turn left ( around Lorrach) to by pass Basle]
Was it a hire car? - if so, the hire company will probably pay the fine and charge your credit card the amount plus a handling fee.
