I totally diasgree with the advice to use your Maiden name and I fear you were misadvised when applying for your Codice Fiscale. What Italians do not seem to understand is that our married names (should we choose to use one) become our legal names, not some adjunct chosen for simply sentimental reasons. Yes everything must match - CF, passport, driving license etc. I've no idea how to rectify this but in my experience more hassles are caused by having a CF in the wrong name than are caused should you ever divorce and change name further down the line. Good luck!
It depends on how old the children are, how long they think they might be there for and in what season. Under 5? A few months only? Spring / Summer? Sure why not? School age? A year? Autumn / winter? Big no no. It would be fun for a few weeks but it's not the best environment for families. They would be better off lower down and closer to schools, amenities and other families.
How many flats in the building? If you are over 3 (I think) you should have formed a codominium. If so, you should each have a document which states your millesimi. Millesimi are calculated on VOLUME of your space plus things like which floor you are on. More than likely he who has the largest flat will have the most millesimi and should therefore pay the lion's share of the roof repairs. If you don't have a condo adminstrator maybe it's time to hire one. If you do have a condo administrator then they should know this and sort it out. If not, you will most likely need to consult a lawyer.
If you are thinking about Abruzzo then have a look at Sulmona. It is 2 hours from Rome and well placed for both sea and mountains with a thriving cultural community - plus a few expats if that makes you feel comfy. There is a very good English language website all about the city if you Google it.
We have an excellent vet in Sulmona called Filippo Fuorto. His clinic 'Fedra' is on Viale Lavoro 0864 251856. Filippo speaks a little English and his assistant Giuliana a little more. If you need someone closer to home, they may very well be able to recommend someone else.
Abruzzo is a great place for a longer stay. If you are thinking of coming off-season then you might get a good deal on a longer let. If not then you are looking at a standard vacation rental but with a small discount probably. Agencies will likely only deal with lets of 1 year or more and are geared principally to the Italian market. For the middle ground, you really need to be here to ask around and see what's available via word of mouth. It's so easy to advertise your vacation rental now to a global market that a short-term rental at the monthy cost of a long term rental, bookable in advance online, doesn't really exist. We have a vacation rental in the centro storico of beautiful Sulmona. You can find it on AirBnB or on Facebook by searching 'Gramsci29'. Good luck with your search!
We've heard that rumour too but not heard of anyone falling foul of it yet - it's because of the US tax law that all foreign bank accounts need to be reported. The issue is whether you can get a non-resident account. There is a small BPER bank in Pacentro itself - with a branch in Sulmona - so you could try there. There are plenty of supermarkets that sell basic supplies in Sulmona and you can almost certainly get it at Diana's mini market in Pacentro too. There is also a very good pet shop in Piazza Garibaldi. Elective residency needs to be organised from the US though - not from here. What visa are you arriving on? Standard 90-day tourist visa? It's all a little complicated but not impossible...
We live in a medium sized town of 25,000 - Sulmona in Abruzzo. There's lots to do here and it's well located for day trips and beyond. Car not necesary on a daily basis. Check out the website called welcometosulmona all in English and our own vacation rental called Gramsci 29.
Good points by Mr Stefano. As mentioned above, IMHO Vasto is really the only seaside 'town' with any kind of character and year-round life. Property will be cheaper elsewhere but there's a good reason for that!
Ciao Anne. We can't offer you a sea view here in Sulmona but we can offer you plenty else besides. I think anywhere nearish to the sea is wonderful from about May to October but if you plan to retire here you may find that coastal areas are a little sad and deserted off season. We are in a very strategic position here with lots to offer and plenty to do and see year round. There is a very good, Egnlish language website all about Sulmona if you want to Google it. You'll find lots of helpful info and inspiration photos on it too. Do give it some consideration. Good luck with your property search - there are lots of super properties out there.
