OK - I am not enjoying the earthquakes now. Very unsettling. 6th one today (apparently) and the last one was a very strong 4. They are all around Mogliano & Loro Piceno. Are they bothering anyone else more since Aquila?

Hi, I am trying to get a list of people affected by the refusal of ASUR 13 & 12 (Ascoli & San Benedetto) to give us permanent residents permanent health cover.

I heard again today that the property market is moving again here in Southern Marche. I am not talking of foreign buyers but just the general property market. Good news for us sellers!

We're letting our shop go in Sarnano. It just didn't bring us any more business so we can't justify the cost.

I went on Tusday back to try to see the director of the health authority that I had previously spoken two and who seemed to never return my calls or be there when I called. Guess what? She wasn't there!

The people I know who have been affected were not trying to deceive but either genuinely didn't know about it or their accountant didn't know the deadline was 20th August.

I think a lot of British people resident in Italy mistakenly assume that if they file a tax return in the UK for their rental income then that is the end of the story. Sprostoni - it is based on the rateable value of your UK property (as these are bands now I have no idea if you just take the mid-point?) and you cannot deduct the council tax you do, or do not, pay in the UK. The rate is 0.76% and it was due by 20th August 2012 at the latest. The fines are pretty hefty at 40% of the tax amount plus interest and fees. I think the thing that has caught a lot of people out is that it is due for 2011 so has to be paid this year even though the law was created in 2012. That plus the government didn't release details of how to calculate it or the deadlines until the last moment.

I don't know here you are but I have never paid that much! Mine cost between €500 and €1200 depedning on what we were doing (ie running a business or not).

Hi Rachel, if I were you I would ask around for a good local accountant and get them to sort it all out for you. I have lived here quite a while and would not attempt to fill out a full tax return myself. There are various unions who can help you too. They usually help people with their tax returns (or do them for them) for a lower fee than an accountant. Ask your nieghbours who they would recommend. In my experience tax in Italy is not a DIY thing :-)

Rachel, the theoretical rental income RAM refers to is not actual rental income from renting your house out but a calculated figure based on the cadastral value of your Italian house. You will also have the income from renting you UK house out so the simplified form won't apply to you I'm afraid, unless you decide to follow Bunterboy's advice of course.

Integration isn't about pretending you're an Italian! For me it is just about being able to take part in society as I would have in the UK. Having friends, socialising, expressing myself etc etc.

I'm firmly in the marmite camp! I think it's hard to fully integrate as so much socialising is done within the family in rural Italy. I am sure in cities it is different. We have moved to somewhere a bit more populous in Italy so our daughter can grow up somewhere a bit more cosmopolitan. I'm not yearning for London but not having to drive 50km to buy her shoes is an added advantage too! I know a few couple who have retired here then Grandchildren have come along and they feel very torn. Some have even returned to their home country as they felt they were missing out. I think if you are of retirement age that is a consideration. Plus I agree with Sebastian. Even if you are retired, having some kind of part-time work or even volunteering is a great way to get to know people. I'm afraid us Brits who lived there during the 80's can't give blood in Italy. I think it's to do with BSE but I was refused...

Another thing to consider is that you will need to pay the IMU equivalent (sorry I have forgotten it's proper name) on the property you own in the UK if you are fiscally resident here in Italy. It has to be paid at 0.76% of the value of your house each year. I don't know if Ram has seen any mre details on how this will be calculated, if you can deduct your council tax etc.....?
