I thought I'd tell you about something I read in the paper the other day.  Apparently Marche region is spending 12 million euro making sure that every comune is served by ADSL.

Hi all, I am trying to get the Ascoli Piceno ASUR13 to clarify the position regarding healthcare rights for permanent residents who are EU citizens. Currently, their ruling is that we may only have registration for 12 months at a time and that thi

My final recommendation for mountain restaurants (at least for the moment) is La Cittadella, again in Montemonaco. A wonderful mountain retreat with a pool with probably the best view in Marche!

Another lovely restaurant in the mountains. For good, hearty mountain food this is really excellent. We ate some of the best prosciutto I have ever eaten here, followed by cinghiale in Vernaccia with pappardelle - delicious!

I know this was on the old forum but I thought it was worth mentioning again. The restaurant Il Tiglio in Isola San Biagio (just outside Montemonaco) is something very different to the other restaurants in this area.

During my search for a document to take to the anagrafe office to shame the chap into giving me my permanent residency certificate, I found the state decree and subsequent circulars pertaining to the new (2007) residency laws.

I have a friend who has one and says it is a pain as the levels of everything have to be just so. This means it requires much more looking after which if you are not living there means you have to pay someone to come out to see to it more often. She has switchec back to Chlorine.

Here you go - they do keep the phone numbers/websites up to date: http://www.sibillini.net/Chiedi_Sibilla/index.html Or try this website: http://www.rifugiappennino.it/?q=browse This one is an absolute must! The views are incredible. We went and wished we'd stayed overnight and the food looked great too: http://www.rifugiodellarocca.it/

I know in the Sibillinis there lots of diferent types of rifugi as Sebastiano says. Some have restaurants and even double rooms. Some you can drive to and some you need to hike to. Some are just shacks where the key is always available and are meant to shelter you from harsh weather (rather than a leisure destinantion) so you'd need to bring all food/sleeping stuff etc. Nearly all are run by the means of a societa/cooperativo who bid to run them and usually get paid a small amount to do so. This is of course becoming less frequent due to the budget cuts so I'm not sure you'll find them all open. Your best starting point would be the CAI in whichever area you want the visit. The Sibillini national park is pretty useless in our experience at this sort of thing. Various sectors of CAI sometimes run the rifugi but if they don't they will definitely know who does. We know most of the ones in the Sibillinis and have phone numbers (somewhere - have to dig them out...) for them from our cycling business days. I hope you're not planning this anytime soon Anne? It'll be snowy up there very shortly if not already!

You can buy them here in Liguria (we are near the French border) from any pharmacy so I woul dimagine you will be able to buy them before you leave Italy.

I think Susan has hit the nail on the head. If you are a 'I hate structured learning' kind of person then it won't work for you. Michel Thomas is not perfect but it does let you concentrate on the speaking. The grammar sort of happens 'by accident'. Plus it's portable so no excuses - you can even have it on your mobile phone!!

Ha ha - that is the perfect description which is what makes it easy to watch!

Proper Italian shovels are great. My OH swears by them as they have a long handle and don;t give you back ache. Never had one break but then that may depend where you buy them from. Forks are harder to find but you can buy them here where we are. Zappas are also really easy to use (again long-handled) and you can get hand ones for flower beds etc. Personally I've never had a problem with the paint here but then I had a listed cottage in the UK and bought lime paint anyway. The paint here contains a lot of lime and so behaves differently. If you are comparing it with the English washable and wipeable stuff then yes it is a) expensive and b) no washable or wipeable. If you are comparing it with Farrow and Ball or someone then it is a similar price (maybe a bit less) and just as good. If you want cheap paint, buy the big tubs of white from SELF or equivalent DIY store (last one I bought was €14 for 25 litres) and mix your own colours. You can buy the primary colours.

I recommend Don Matteo. It's light-hearted and the Italian is fairly easy. I'm sure you can get it on DVD or watch it on You Tube. I also found Michel Thomas great as I could just let it wash over me on the train.

Yes, you will need to have residency to be able to use the forms from the DWP. Most commune will not enrole your children in school unless you are resident either. If you stay longer than 3 months then you must claim residency. Having said that I know people who haven't but then they have private health insurance. I think you'll find it has tax implications for you too so you will need some good advice on that. What happens if you leave Italy every 2 1/2 months I don;t know but may be worth looking into.
