I thought I'd tell you about something I read in the paper the other day.  Apparently Marche region is spending 12 million euro making sure that every comune is served by ADSL.

Hi all, I am trying to get the Ascoli Piceno ASUR13 to clarify the position regarding healthcare rights for permanent residents who are EU citizens. Currently, their ruling is that we may only have registration for 12 months at a time and that thi

My final recommendation for mountain restaurants (at least for the moment) is La Cittadella, again in Montemonaco. A wonderful mountain retreat with a pool with probably the best view in Marche!

Another lovely restaurant in the mountains. For good, hearty mountain food this is really excellent. We ate some of the best prosciutto I have ever eaten here, followed by cinghiale in Vernaccia with pappardelle - delicious!

I know this was on the old forum but I thought it was worth mentioning again. The restaurant Il Tiglio in Isola San Biagio (just outside Montemonaco) is something very different to the other restaurants in this area.

During my search for a document to take to the anagrafe office to shame the chap into giving me my permanent residency certificate, I found the state decree and subsequent circulars pertaining to the new (2007) residency laws.

Can't you renew it online and get someone to sedn yuo the tax disc? Either that or register it as SORN (statutory off road notice) so that road tax isn't due and buy a disc before you leave the UK.

Hmmmm. Income tax is higher in Italy but you can offset so many more things against your tax bill so I'm beginning to think it is swings and roundabouts. Mortgage interest relief, medical bills, contact lenses & glasses, car costs etc etc.For us it is the ridiculously high INPS that is the killer. That and the endless permits & permissions for each individual comune if you want to do business. Especially as the National Park where we have a business comes under four different provinces and two different regions. Gives me a headache just thinking about it. Personally, I would have said €15,000 to €20,000 a year would be sufficient if you don't want to do anything extravagant or have any big car repair bills or try to renovate a house.

It's interesting going to bigger towns. I remember being in Fermo one evening in a very nice wine bar when a couple of women dropped in for a couple of glasses of wine after work (no food - just wine) just like in the UK and no-one batted an eyelid. It would be different here!I suspect Russ's answer re the personal ads is correct. The Italian eqivalent of the Thai bride scenario. Poeta, I wouldn't believe too much of what you read in the papers about Italy. To be honest, it gives us a good laugh. According to a lot of the UK press, Italy has been in recession for at least the last 5 years. I wonder who has been buying all the new appartments and building those new factories you see on the way to the coast then? Anyway - which figures were they using? teh official ones? What about the black economy?I read a great book which explained Italy's fondness for Mussolini and how he could have ever been elected. I suspect the same reasons apply to Berlusconi. He is the epitomy of the self-made man. An Italian friend of ours was telling us that none of his friends were the least bit bothered by Berlusconis alledged antics with prostitues but were very dismayed and irate at the fact some of it took place in the equivalent of 10 Downing Street. He was concerned about the security risk - how did they smuggle cameras and sound recording equipment in? A very different perspective to the international press.

I tell you what is interesting. If you look in the back of Corriere Annunci (local free ads paper with a lonely hearts section), lots of Italian men are looking for non Italian women. They actually say they don't want any Italian women, only Russian, Ukranian etc. What is that all about???

Do it quietly if at all possible. Maybe put your stuff on someone else's stall and pay them a small cut, otherwise there are the licences, tax and INPS for "commercianti" (currently €2800 a year).
