I have a couple of less-than-usual interests. One of them is Irish traditional music - I play the flute. Since arriving in Lunigiana (near Pontremoli) I have not taken part in any music sessions.

Expensive, and I will learn Italian, but no way would I have been ready to cope with an Italian OS in time to start working!
"We are particularly concerned that in the past some have complained about being charged just to transfer money into their account, and I am not referring to exchange charges." That happened to me. But I don't know how to get round it. Welcome to Italy.
Thanks for the tips, especially the one about subito - I didn't know anything about it. A couple of quick samples suggest that it has a little more on offer at the moment than ebay. Fabbriche, until the container arrives and we arrange things, it's hard to say exactly what is surplus, though there is a likelihood that beds, washing machines, fridges, sofas and chairs will be involved, as well as smaller things. At the moment I only know of the two surplus TVs that we already have here. The ship is expected in Livorno on Wednesday, then there is customs clearance followed by road transfer before we face the mound of "stuff" and make decisions, so I imagine it will be 3 or 4 weeks yet before we really will want to shift stuff. Thanks again Alex
I use XE.com - much better than the transfers offered by the bank. Takes a day or two to get set up, but worth it IMHO. I'm sure other companies are good too. Alex
I moved here (also Tuscany) from Oz (Sydney), arriving 5 or 6 weeks ago, and by dint of keeping up the pressure have just today got as far as being allowed to put my precious cash on the table and get a car, which I expect to get in a week or so. I'm sure it could take longer! So for a single year, I can't say whether the long-term hire or lease schemes are good, but I can say that they would be worth looking into. Oh, we are also in MS! Good luck Alex
The chamber of commerce really is of no interest to me, unless I really have to – I speak no Italian at all (although of course I want to learn, since I live here now), and all my work is for clients in other countries, principally Germany. I am definitely a translator, not an interpreter, and have no interest at all in doing court work. I can see I have to get a commercialista very quickly, preferably one who can speak some English! I really appreciate the time you have put into answering this – thanks! Alex
Thanks everyone so far. I have been assigned a partita IVA, but I have not been registered for INPS, nor have I dealt with the Camera di Commercio - I've never been with a Chamber of Commerce, having done this work for 12 or more years now in UK, Ireland and Australia. Although I am a full member of a UK institute, it does not have chartered status, and my work as a translator is not regulated, and I am completely independent. So am I a lib prof? The anagrafe here could not decide.
