Questions Asked

I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you store furniture in Italy beyond a certain period you will have to pay VAT. Can anyone advise please? Does anyone know of any storage in the Lucca area short term (max 4 months)? Many thanks.

We're busy considering which possessions should be abandoned before moving to Italy. Can anyone advise on the use of UK electrical appliances in Italy (obviously with the appropriate adaptor).

Can anyone explain what is meant by the heating system riscaldamento autonimo? Does this refer to any form of heating system over which you have direct control?

Can anyone explain the policy on not allowing non residents to buy a car? Surely if this regulation was lifted it could boost the economy hugely. Has anyone got a way round it? It's a long drive down there and hiring a vehicle is pricey.

We are driving to Italy at the beginning of April for 12 weeks. As we live in the Channel Islands (which are non Schengen) do we need to register with the police on arrival?

Hi AllI'm becoming more and more confused the more I read. Coming from the Channel Islands we are NOT part of the EU which surprises a lot of people.

We are about to come over to look at a property north of Pescia in the hills. Could anyone advise on what the winters are like up there?

My husband and I are considering buying a property in Italy but are not EU residents. We would only be in Italy for periods of up to 3 months at any one time.

Sorry to confuse, no, I didn't mention importing, I thoght you were implying that I'd have to pay whether or not stuff was going into storage.Thanks.

Thanks for that modicasa. Do you mean IVA on storage or on importing the furniture?

Thanks for that! I'll have a search. As for the moderators, maybe they'd like to field that one!

Thanks yallman for taking the trouble to answer in such detail! The info was very helpful. (LargeLewis thanks too for your response but I'm surprised that the moderators let your comment through!)I think I"m going to need a qualified electrician as and when we get to Italy and will most probably be buying new appliances fro the kitchen etc. I've discovered that the house we are keen on has a PV system so will provide more than the usual domestic supply.Again, thanks all for your help.

The event in Lucca was entitled Andare Oltre si Puo and is to support families facing the challenge of Down Syndrome. http://www.andareoltresipuo.it/it/2015-04-20-15-55-00/2015-04-20-16-04-38/white-party-2015 This was their second year.I hope I'm in town for the 2016 event!

I've just got back from Lucca and have started subscribing to the ex-pat magazine, Lucca Grapevine, a lovely little magazine that contains some excellent articles and also lists useful contacts. They were describing a wonderful event that took place recently to raise money for charity. This was a white evening of elegance. Everyone was invited to the main piazza but they were asked to wear white, bring their table (complete with white cloth, candelabra etc ) No plastic was allowed! This is the sort of thing I love about Italy! It sounded like something out of a Marcello Mostroianni film!

Many thanks for that Alan. I'm all too familiar with the house supply tripping having spent a fair bit of time in Italy.I wasn't sure if it would be possible just to continue using our electricals with adaptors fitted. Many thanks for your help.
