I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you store furniture in Italy beyond a certain period you will have to pay VAT. Can anyone advise please? Does anyone know of any storage in the Lucca area short term (max 4 months)? Many thanks.

We're busy considering which possessions should be abandoned before moving to Italy. Can anyone advise on the use of UK electrical appliances in Italy (obviously with the appropriate adaptor).
Can anyone explain what is meant by the heating system riscaldamento autonimo? Does this refer to any form of heating system over which you have direct control?
Can anyone explain the policy on not allowing non residents to buy a car? Surely if this regulation was lifted it could boost the economy hugely. Has anyone got a way round it? It's a long drive down there and hiring a vehicle is pricey.
We are driving to Italy at the beginning of April for 12 weeks. As we live in the Channel Islands (which are non Schengen) do we need to register with the police on arrival?
Hi AllI'm becoming more and more confused the more I read. Coming from the Channel Islands we are NOT part of the EU which surprises a lot of people.
We are about to come over to look at a property north of Pescia in the hills. Could anyone advise on what the winters are like up there?
My husband and I are considering buying a property in Italy but are not EU residents. We would only be in Italy for periods of up to 3 months at any one time.
Dear All, I'm new to the site and would welcome your advice/experience regarding purchasing a property.

Thanks for that!
Thanks Modicasa, that's certainly the message that I've been getting from enquiries. Thanks to all for the information. Let's hope things change before too long!
Curiouser and curiouser!
Thanks for this. It would just seem a very easy way to boost the Italian economy. We're okay to drive down at the moment but it gets expensive having overnight stops and paying for fuel. However, if we do stay our maximum 90 days, it's still a cheaper option than hiring.
Again Gala (sorry for mis-spelling your name!) I think I've got some reading to do!
Thanks for this Galia. I had seen it some weeks ago. Not many people realise that the Channel Islands are not part of the EU (or the UK) so I'm unsure what our position would be. I've seen the older posts where many folk are saying that rental is still the cheaper option but it certainly proves expensive if we visit often. Thanks again for the link.
I'm an avid fan and could happily watch these two every day of the week. It's not just the subject matter of the programme (art history and Italian cuisine( but the wonderful relationship between these two men. Both experts in their own field they have such respect for one another and both are keen to learn about their travel companion's passion. For those who haven't seen it yet I would say it's a Must See for all lovers of Italy. Roll on 9pm!
Excuse my ignorance but a) is the Italian driving test conducted in Italian and is there a theory test? b) what is the position re licences for non EU drivers if resident?
Many thanks Ugo. You're a font of information. This document may be beyond my limited Italian but I will study it carefully. Again, thank you for your trouble.
Thanks for pointing that out to me Fillide (and thanks Ugo) I hadn't put my italian hat on and was searching for the English names. Silly me! I have spent the day going round in circles trying to contact Consulates. No-one wants to let you speak to a real person. Both of the island consulates have dreadful answerphones one I cannot understand and the other an Americanised computerised voice. London wants to charge me 75p a minute. It was so nice when you used to be able to talk to real people!
