This is a question for those of you that travel to Italy by car.I know there is a good few of you who do this trip on a number of occasions each year.I am currently looking to replace my current car and purchase something newer for the journey to
Driving through France............ i recently got back from my 3 week trip from Italy, i stopped over nite at Cernobbio at Lake Como which broke up our trip from the South of Italy nicely. So I am still interested in the routes you fellow car tour
So, we are planning to head down to my parents holiday villa in Saline Ioniche, Reggio Calabria next summer by car starting off from our UK base Northampton.
i was in my teens back then, my parents drove and i just enjoyed the experience. My father used to do the trip in 36 hours door to door with only a few hours sleep at the service stations and then crack on again. All in all its 1700 miles 1 way for us.We are heading to a remote part of Reggio Calabria, around a 15 minute stay away from the port that docks to head over to sicily. As we have a family villa in calabria and we are there for 17 days for us its about getting there as soon as possible to enjoy as much time there as we can. If i had over 3 weeks i would take more time getting there but its not possible to take more time off with work commitments etc for now.The benefit is that theres 2 of us driving.
It will be my 1st time driving myself in August but i have been a passenger many a time in the early and late 90's and loved the whole experience of getting off the ferry and knowing your on the continent.Driving through Switzerland there are some lovely places to stop off and admire the amazing views.I admit its going to be a tiring drive but i think it will be enjoyable non the less given that your in the holiday mood.
I have done this trip before back in the 90's when my dad was younger and he used to drive down. Used to take him around 35 hours to do 1600 miles getting the ferry from dover - calais and then doing the luxembourg route down through to Switzerland then the autostada del sole all the way down Italy. As he was eager to get down there and knew he had a 1 months rest to look forward to he didnt stop overnight at any hotel but took regular breaks for food and for a snooze. I want to make the journey part of the holiday so at least 1 stop overnight at a nice scenic hotel would be nice.
i have earmarked around a minimum of £400 mark for fuel, considering the size of the tank and also the likely mpg. this is based on travelling 1500 miles each way. Again does this sound about right?
i think im therefore being overly optimistic then. I would imagine with fuel and food stops during the day one could probably do around 8 hours driving in 1 day without being too shattered. Bearing in mind we intend to book an overnight hotel after the first full day of travel.

thanks for the replies all, went with greenflag in the end, over the phone they quoted me £106 but got it for £62 in the end with an online discount.
