I used to use Calais - Nice for popping to Northern Italy - could be very expensive.

We've done this three times over the years:
Boulogne to Bologna
Calais to Bologna
Brussels to Bologna
All three included a ferry crossing but each time was in the region of £1000, for a car plus two passengers.
At first, it was broadly equivalent to two air fares and two weeks car hire, but since these have come down a long way in fifteen years, the cost is too much for us.
It was a pleasant experience. Food on the trains varied, with the belgian train besr, but most expensive.
Overnight accommodation was acceptable, if not palatial.
Probably worth trying once, for the experience.
You can at least bring a reasonable quantity of wine back, in your own car, without the 2000 miles drive.

Italy is an excellent place. And heard a lot about it. I think this link would help
you to find such places and would provide you some good offers and much more information.
