9686 Route Planning

Its getting to the time when people drive down to Italy. There are many route planner facilities that can be found on line.

Here is a list of some of them;-

Mappy - Road Guide

Route Planner (Europe) : Maps and directions - The AA

RAC Route planner

ViaMichelin: street map, maps, map UK, route finder, route planner, directions, road map, route map

Map24 – Route planner and maps for UK, Europe and USA

MapQuest: Driving Directions & Business Directory

I use Mappy – its relatively easy to use – more detailed than some [AA and RAC don’t recognise smaller places in Italy] - has pretty clear directions and shows speed cameras.

Hope this helps someone.

We need to take an 8 year old VW Polo to Veneto in September and were thinking of Dusseldorf -Verona cartrain.Has anyone out there looked at Motorail as a viable alternative to driving all the way ?:laughs:

I used to use Calais - Nice for popping to Northern Italy - could be very expensive.

We've done this three times over the years:
Boulogne to Bologna
Calais to Bologna
Brussels to Bologna

All three included a ferry crossing but each time was in the region of £1000, for a car plus two passengers.

At first, it was broadly equivalent to two air fares and two weeks car hire, but since these have come down a long way in fifteen years, the cost is too much for us.

It was a pleasant experience. Food on the trains varied, with the belgian train besr, but most expensive.

Overnight accommodation was acceptable, if not palatial.

Probably worth trying once, for the experience.
You can at least bring a reasonable quantity of wine back, in your own car, without the 2000 miles drive.

you to find such places and would provide you some good offers and much more information.
