11769 Does any one fancy owning their own book shop?

We have the entire stock of our small book shop for sale, as we are returning to the UK.

It is a nice way of earning some money, which is not always so easy here in Italy!
We have approximately 1400 books in English of which 30% are hard back 70% paperback and about 20% ARE BRAND NEW (all percentages are approximate). All are in great condition.

Many were provided to us by Melvyn (Lord) Bragg, from his personal library, and many are signed by the authors.
There is a wide selection of crime, romance, horror, biographies, military, history, cookery, children's, home and garden, self help, poetry, plays, gardening, language, and travel - in short, something for every one!

We have carried out an inventory, and at current SECOND HAND prices, the value of this collection is €8,759,00 (EUROS).
We are selling the entire collection for €3,500,00 (EUROS).

If any one is interested please contact me.
Best wishes,
Nicky

Nicky Hi. If you haven't any luck then try ebay or also advertise for free expatriates.com - the online community for expatriates or Welcome to English Yellow Pages for Italy - your guide to English-speaking businesses and professionals

What about the recently opened English bookshop in Sarnano? They may be interested in buying your stock.
http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/do-see/11503-english-books-sarnano.html
I'm sure there was another longer and more detailed thread about the shop but unfortunately time is a bit tight and I couldn't find it! I'm sure it is there somewhere!

Good Luck!

Me thinks that it is Nicky's bookshop in Sarnano that is actually selling the stock!!

We will try to get there soon, to have a look...................possibly tomoz.........................I noticed passing your martial arts place today, items were set up ready for the browsers? Good luck for the rest of your time here and even better when you get back to the UK (can't recall your daughters name ?).................

Oh dear! Is it really? As the shop only opened a month ago I assumed it was coincidental so did not put two and two together. Apologies for the faux pas.

You could try posting on the Puglia Posse website as there are lots of Brits down there. There`s a library also so, you never know, someone down there might fancy starting up a bookshop. I`d have been quite interested myself if we hadn`t also had to move back to the UK. Good luck with your move.

We are returning to the UK in two weeks and have reduced the sale price of our books shop contents to €2,500.
If anyone is interested please call Nicky on 3665358033 or PM me.

What a remarkable discount!
Maybe you could check the thread "Make me pay" if you grazie the very first post then Juliancoll will donate £1 to our (forum) Abruzzo relief collection.
Good luck with the move.

Please pass the following link on to all your mates

Really good news for our Marche group, Nicky and Jeff have very kindly donated their bunk beds and mattresses, to help the victims of the Abruzzo earthquake. That means that we will have 18 beds to send to the area , plus bedding, which is fanatastic. These beds are nearly new and suitable for adults and children, so a big thank you from us.

For the attention of all.

The beds that are the subject of these posts were bought from us for £900.00 (that's pounds) by Russ, solely so they can be sent to the people of Abruzzo.

It is an extraordinary act of kindness by Russ, done to help both us (the Sawyers) in our situation and the earthquake victims in Abruzzo.

This was made clear when the beds were made available to the group who are organising aid for the victims and we have never claimed credit for it; it is down to Russ and Sergio.

Thanks for the tolerance and support shown by the vast majority of you regarding our advertising of the property we've had to sell in order to get back to Britain.

This is the last time we'll be reading/posting on this forum.

Good luck to everyone.

Jeff and Nicky Sawyer

Thanks for that Nicky, it appears to be a misunderstanding on my part, but have sent my apologies and thanks to Russ for such a generous donation.

Well done Russ, we know that you have a huge heart.
We are awaiting news from the Protezioni Civili, Macerata re collection.
Can I do one big thanks on behalf of us Marche folk?

I echo that on behalf of all those in Abruzzo, such generosity is very moving.

Thank you

It is my privelege.

Just so that you all know, there was some background to this, which I feel compelled to share with you all.

A few weeks back I saw that Ryanair was running a competition, seeking new ideas for revenue raising. I sent off an idea which was part tongue in cheek, but part based on logic and some uncomfortable flights I have had. Much to my amazement I found that out of 12,000 entries, mine was in the final 5! Now what has this got to do with Nicky and Jeff's beds I hear you ask?

Well, rather stupidly, in a fit of peak and excitement of hearing the news last week that I was in with a chance and amongst all the fundraising that was going on, I requested another forum member to post the voting link to Ryanair and if I won, said I would donate 50% of my winnings to the fund. I cannot and will not detail the reply I received, but the up shot was that this persons view was that the sole reason I was asking this was because I wanted to line my own pockets and there was no way that I could win without forum members support. I did try and explain this was absolutely not the case, but my explanation was met only with pure disgust and more vicious oupouring.

I took this really very hard, as it was never ever my motive and my focus was on the Euro500 for the fund and not for me. In retrospect I should have said the whole Euro1,000 and that would have made it alright presumably.

Anyway, yesterday at Nicky and Jeffs I saw they still had their beds that they had been desparately trying to sell for ages, to help them move back to the UK. The words that had been written about me were still ringing in my ears and I thought to myself, whether I win or lose this stupid competition, I'll buy the beds and see if they can get sent over to L'Aquila. So that was that.

Then this morning I discovered that from 100,000 votes, my suggestion had secured 40% of them, without the help from anyone, apart from a few real friends Some, who know me very well, suggested that a pot shouldn't call a kettle black. You will need to see the winning entry to understand that.

Was I so wrong to have suggested this "underhand" way of getting votes? To be honest, I really don't know, but what I do know is that I should have asked a real friend about my idea.

However, at the end of the day, it looks as though I might get the £900 back, Nicky and Jeff have got shot of the beds and a bit more cash to help them re--build their lives back in the UK and moreover 18 people (or 36 if they top 'n tail) will have somewhere comfortable to sleep tonight.

I apologise to anyone who is offended by either my suggestion to Ryanair or the methods in which I proposed to win this prize.

I just wish I could feel good about it.

Russ

Russ no need to feel bad. Far from it. You bought the beds regardless of whether or not you recouped the money. It's a wonderful.act of compassion.

No need to feel bad Russ.

I’m sure that it is better, in the end, to donate to the people of L’Aquila from your own generosity than to donate the proceeds of a rigged competition.

What is your potentially winning idea? I can’t seem to find the competition.

Here are the details of the competition that Russ participated in. Ryanair launches "discretionary charge" competition - Business Traveller.

I won't post links to Ryanair here, as I know how emotional people get, but it's there.

Rigged?? Now I wonder who you've been taking to?

I suppose making a phone vote for a relative or friend on Britains got Talent or The X Factor must fall into the same category.

Only going by what you said Russ
I requested another forum member to post the voting link to Ryanair and if I won, said I would donate 50% of my winnings to the fund.
As it happens I have found a link (although not the voting link) which states:

Ryanair will choose the winning entry, and their decision will be final.

So maybe votes don’t count anyway?

All this is beside the point which is that you have made a generous gesture which will benefit Nicky and the people of L’Aquila.

Well done

From what I read on the website the competition closed 6 pm yesterday. The winning entry- excess fees for overweight passengers based on body mass index, An overwhelming 40,000 people voted for Russ!!!

and that is why I said might........

Hey - let us lighten (heavy!) this up with a blast from the past. (Remember, the big boys from the l'Aquila rugby team were amongst the first to shoulder heave blocked doors out of the way).....so I hope this one might make some of you cry

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9vuVl0ebpM&feature=related]YouTube - Big Bad John- Jimmy Dean[/ame]

Anyway - compliments to Russ for his mega-generous gesture on the beds.

Russ, you are a wonderful person.

Wow! All I will say is that God certainly moves in mysterious ways and sometimes, as in this case, with absolute vengeance and lightening speed!

Well done indeed Russ for your generous donation - and even though it has cost you FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS MORE than your original intention to donate half your winnings (ie;- the beds have cost you NINE HUNDRED POUNDS instead of the £500.00 half share of the winnings you originally wanted to donate) you will still get a hundred quid for your stress and the people of Abruzzo are "richer" to the tune of 18 beds - and no one can question your integrity, intention or honesty - can they?

Now, THAT'S what I call a win/win situation!

Well, someone has more than questioned it, as you saw from my earlier post.

For your informaton, if I do win, you will see that the prize is in Euro, not pounds. Therefore at current exchange rates, I will not get a hundred quid for my "stress", as the beds were paid for in pounds. Even now, another snide dig has to come in, doesn't it and again with no foundation.

Many thanks for all the messages of support, both public and private, it is very much appreciated,

For the person who took it upon themself to judge me, perhaps they would like to step forward and say their piece publicly........... or like most bullies, are they just a coward?

Russ
and no one can question your integrity, intention or honesty - can they?

THAT'S what I call a win/win situation!
Russ, I know you are fretting about this - but do you really want to force the issue here? Goading someone into saying their piece publically may mean they accept your challenge and step up to the plate. And then what would happen?

I'll tell you what would happen - claim and counter claim would force the members to become jurors. :swoon:

It may divide the forum beyond repair and destroy all that has been achieved recently. Do you really want that?

Surely, this is not the time nor the place for it and I think many would agree with me about that. I honestly think you would be wiser to let it be - but if you are really so incensed - then take it to the Circolo and let your battle commence there.

What d'ya say?

Thanks for that. I'll commence it in a more appropriate place....... but not on this forum.

Russ

Good boy - somehow I had a very strong feeling you might see sense when it came down to the real nitty gritty.

.......... a man of my word. Sempre

It's seems you're trying to push your luck to prove your point Russ - which may or may not be valid - so just open a thread in the Circolo - get it off your chest - and hope the opposing party has the God given strength to resist the challenge and temptation to join you.

I tell you, it would take a stronger more self controlled person than me to resist, but I think you either have to do it - or - stop squeaking about it.

Russ, your suggestion is in the News section of the Ryanair website and even a topic of conversation on Loose Women today.

PS I sent in a few suggestions but obviously not good enough

Yep and I am now watching my husband's waist measurement VERY closely. But the Forum Member who won the Ryanair competition, didn't keep the money ...it was used as part of the L'Aquila Donation I believe.....A long story but all in a good cause.

Russ, I think it's wonderful what you're doing. As for anyone, who has a problem with it: Get a life! I'm not able to donate much money but want to help whichever way I can. So thanks to anyone who's contributed to our food collection. We are now calling for help for the suffering animals. I know the call is for dry pet food. Having spoken to Sarah about the collection this morning, I know that all sorts of pet bedding, toys, baskets, food bowls, etc. would also be needed. so if you have any old blankets, etc... Also, is there anyone who would consider fostering an animal for anyone who's not able to look after their pet due to losing their home, etc but would like it back when their life has returned to normality? I would like to talk to Francesca from the rescue centre about setting up a pet fostering scheme.
I would also like to appeal for help for the children.
I'm having a sorting through my daughters out-grown clothes and obsolete toys. I think it would be great to collect any clothes and toys that people don't need for their children anymore. I'd be happy to organize a collection to take to Abbruzzo. So anyone wanting to contribute, please let me know. It'd be great if you can put the word out to anyone with children as surely they'll have things to add to a collection.

I dont believe the prize money has been paid out from Ryanair yet Noble and so it hasn't been donated to the Abruzzo Earthquake forum fund, although half of the total prize money (£500.00) was so very kindly promised to the fund by Russ, who has also very generously bought the bunk beds spoken about above.
