All a commercial racket these days in both Italy and UK.
Prefer to think of it as Mothering Sunday. Used to go to church as children and collect a little posy of flowers to take home for our Mums.

The Italian Mothers day is the second May Sunday

The 8th March is what the italians call La Festa della Donna - its a kind of festa for all Women ( so you should've been celebrating too ;) ) They give mimosa in Piemonte too - I think other regions use different flowers. You're right about May for Mothers Day in Italy - its on the 12th May.
