Ferrari Formula One team president Luca Montezemolo and Piero Ferrari, son of company founder Enzo, have responded angrily to remarks by Northern League Minister Roberto Calderoli after the Italian team failed to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.
A decision to call in Spanish driver Fernando Alonso for an early pit stop is generally agreed to have cost him the race and Mr Calderoli said that Italy is ashamed of the Ferrari team’s performance. He also called for Mr Montezemolo’s resignation.
Mr Montezemolo admitted that the decision was a mistake but said that he would answer Mr Calderoli when the politician “achieves 1% of what Ferrari has done for Italy in terms of industry and sport”. Piero Ferrari expressed surprise at the intervention of a politician and said he was “saddened” at the remarks.
Fernando Alonso has been philosophical, saying that in sport, “You win some, you lose some”.
Do you think that Mr Calderoli had a right to comment on the race?
