Pistoia based Domus Energia is heading up a project to build five windfarms in the northern portion of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Each farm will host 25 windmills.

The windfarms will be offshore and therefore not visible from land. According to Domus Energia General Manager Roberto Iacono, ''the farms will produce 400-500 megawatts of wind energy, which will take care of the daily requirements of at least 250,000 people''.

Total investments range from 500 to 700 million euros.

Domus Energia management said expected production will be above and beyond that indicated in the Tuscan regional government's energy plan, which foresees a jump from current wind energy production of 27.8 megawatts to 300 megawatts with the construction of 25 plants.

Iacono went on to explain that his company's project would allow them to reach and exceed the objectives put in place by the regional government.

Each offshore windfarm could take up a space of six square kilometres, in a portion of the sea where there is no commercial or civil navigation and would not block any navigation directed toward the ports.

Iacono went on to note that the project has already been presented to the Environment Ministry and that it ''allows for the replacement of any marine life that is displaced during the entire process''.
