Mona Lisa: Old Mysteries and New Research about the World’s Most Famous Portrait

It’s been a half-millennium since Leonardo da Vinci set out to paint the now-famous portrait we call Mona Lisa. Scholars have penned millions of words over several generations about this single portrait. In fact, the scholarship on Leonardo da Vinci and this picture is immense and daunting, at the same time that it’s very much alive and developing. 

In spite of generations of study, sometimes it seems we have as many questions as answers about the lady and her likeness.
