The 2011 Pirelli Calendar, unveiled in Moscow yesterday, has a mythological theme. The calendar, designed by German fashion king Karl Lagerfeld, contains 36 images including one of the actress Julianne Moore as the goddess Hera.
Lagerfeld said that the calendar represents the classical ideal of beauty and that the Greek and Roman goddesses were the first liberated women. He also pointed out that this ideal, with its emphasis on youth, cult of the body and nature, is easy for people to relate to today.
Five male models are among those who posed for the calendar and the Italian models Bianca Balti and Elisa Sednaoui also appear. Lagerfeld said that he chose Moore as Hera because she is beautiful but “more matronly” than the younger women.
The Pirelli Calendar first appeared in 1964 and was initially distributed to garages that sold the company’s tyres but now it is reserved for Pirelli’s most prestigious clients. Former editions of the Calendar have become collectors’ pieces.
