Nonna Maria & Friends: A Parody of Immigrant Italian Grandparents

You may recognize your Italian nonna - or maybe not - in a web series that parodies growing up in an Italian-immigrant household and being shaped by the traditions that grandparents brought from their homeland.

Behind the “Nonna Maria & Friends” series are five friends who grew up together in and around Montreal, Canada. In their words, “The show follows the adventures of the title character, Nonna Maria; a zany, eccentric, 2-foot tall, loving, and sometimes unpredictable Italian grandmother. Along with her husband Nonno Luigi and their grown grandson, Davie, they set about exploring their Italian community through their entertaining misadventures in their hometown and abroad.”

They have been making videos featuring Nonna Maria and her close friends and family for the past five years. Their purpose was “the discovery of a means of conserving culture in a fun and playful manner. The inspiration for Nonna Maria & Friends has always been and will always be to capture the essence of our Nonni and make ourselves and the community laugh.”

The group of friends is now looking to crowdfund the filming for a new season and are promoting a funding campaign on their website, http://www.nonnamaria.tv.

Here’s one video from their series; it is titled “Shit Nonnas Say” video, and it is inspired by Shit Girls Say, a humorous Twitter feed and web series created by Canadian writers Kyle Humphrey and Graydon Sheppard, poking fun at what is considered to be stereotypically female conversation. In the same way, the video makes fun of what a stereotypical Nonna would say, using a heavy Southern Italian accent.
