Someone asked me to report on our stay in the Ospizio San Gottardo on our way down by car. Having recovered sufficiently from the heat on arrival in Italy here goes:Thanks to all of you who recommended routes and hotels.
In September I'm doing the nearest I'll ever do to jetsetting by flying back to London for a meeting then out again the next day! I'm planning to leave the hire car at Ciampino overnight.

Thanks Gaia but I don't think the Ryanair Pescara-Stansted flight goes over Monaco
I don't know anything about this particular project, but in general I have difficulty in condemning new rail links. Anything that deters road and air travel would probably get my vote. Or put another way, I'd save my energies for campaigning against new Autostrade or airports. I appreciate I don't live int eh path of this particular rail link and don't know the environmental sensitivities involved, but the ecological footprint of train travel must be tiny in comparison to others.
Ooh Brian - that's a can of worms you've opened! All non-Tuscans are going to sing the praises of their own region! So I'll start with mine. Your description of helpfulness etc mirrors mine in southern marche. My brother, speaking no Italian and with four young children, found his brake pipes leaking outside the local restaurant where they'd just had their evening meal (the type where you see the ENEL etc vans parked at lunchtime - so you KNOW the food will be good and cheap!) This was quite late at night but the owner rang his mate who came and took the car away, took bro and family home and brought the car back next day. He also wrote up what had happened for AVis who were mightily impressed. So I may say was my brother!! I suspect that if my area becomes as popular as Tuscany then some of that will disappear - it's inevitable. Other regions make great play of "learning the lessons" of Tuscan tourism and I reckon that people who come to Marche presently aren't interested in ticking off visits to the Uffizi etc so don't flock in hordes to places but disappear into the countryside and stay there. And I'll finish my peaon of praise by saying we had a couple of well-travelled American friends to stay last September who, having been taken from one hilltop town to another - all with unequalled views and friendly restaurants - said that this was the most beautiful place they had ever been to.
That looks like the hill climb Alan. Arriving late Friday so will be keeping ears and eyes peeled - it would make OH's holiday! Oops - you posted again whilst I was typing - thanks Alan - we'll definitely be there!
Cedric - have you contacted coseperlacasa on here? Or via his website: http://www.philipwhitefreight.com/Phil_White_Freight/Welcome.html He'll do a good job
The Tourist office in Montefortino has a good selection. Of course its opening hours are another matter entirely!
Thanks Centauro
