Someone asked me to report on our stay in the Ospizio San Gottardo on our way down by car. Having recovered sufficiently from the heat on arrival in Italy here goes:Thanks to all of you who recommended routes and hotels.

In September I'm doing the nearest I'll ever do to jetsetting by flying back to London for a meeting then out again the next day! I'm planning to leave the hire car at Ciampino overnight.

I've just finished this book written in 1966 by John Verney, who was a PoW in Sulmona and was looked after by local contadini after his escape.

I've never done it but Canadian friends who spend 3 months in Italy from September always lease a car. Not the same as car hire and that's all I know but you might want to look into it.

what we need is a new form of politics, and given that Italy's system of Government is so broken, perhaps Italians could take the lead.  interestig review by David Runciman of the above book in the Guardian yesterday (sorry don't know how to insert a link using a Tablet)

Whilst I agree you don't want them taking over everything, they support a lot of wildlife and that's my excuse for avoiding the thankless task of eradication (which you won't ever achieve anyway)

In one of the Abruzzo blogs (may have been this one https://www.facebook.com/lifeinabruzzo?fref=ts) I came across a wonderful description from the mid 19th century by an English traveller about the transhumance in  Abruzzo (or "the Abruzzi" as they seemed to call it then).  Best of all, he was travelling by horseback and with a little terrier! I don't have the document to hand, it's on my bookshelf in Italy, but you may find an Abruzzo resident will come along in due course. I'll go and look you book up now.  I have a special interest in italians' experience of WW2 and am always looking for more books on the subject

you DEFINITELY need a good one of those. And probably a lawyer. Don't know the Italian system but in the Uk courts and tax aythorities routinely look behind the paperwork to ascertain the actual position. Just because a contract says someone is working as a freelance doesn't mean that will be accepted. If actually the coditions are such that they look like an employee, then that is what they may turn out to be. I use antonio del gaizo who has offices in uk and italy and understands both systems.  his advert is above
