Someone asked me to report on our stay in the Ospizio San Gottardo on our way down by car. Having recovered sufficiently from the heat on arrival in Italy here goes:Thanks to all of you who recommended routes and hotels.
In September I'm doing the nearest I'll ever do to jetsetting by flying back to London for a meeting then out again the next day! I'm planning to leave the hire car at Ciampino overnight.

I've just finished this book written in 1966 by John Verney, who was a PoW in Sulmona and was looked after by local contadini after his escape.

.....which are that even if you are in the right the cost and aggro involved makes it not worth it. No doubt you could go to court and prove that the geometra/builder's work isn't fit for purpose and you are entitled to compensation and interst and costs. Meanwhile your leak is getting bigger and bigger over the years. If you want to pursue it legally you will need to show you have mitigated your loss. So you need to get it put right first and then go to court.I'm talking from a UK perspective - and I'm sure locals will correct me if I'm wrong - but somertimes just putting it down to experience is the cheapest and less stressful way
The reason I bother to contribute at all to threads which take this turn is to try and help preserve the forum/community/corner shop/whatever for ALL users, and to indicate that vicious little schemes are not the norm here but the exception. And the reason for doing that is so that people like Jenta aren't put off. Otherwise this site would quickly descend into a certain type of "liveliness" in which only Trolls prosper. So don't get wound up, don't get put off - just visualise the offending poster thus:and move on (in my case, after a fag-break)
I agree the new setup isn't as easy to navigate as the old one, and I never look further than the first page (though since that's where all the newest posts are, not sure I'm missing anything anyway). And it's a shame that some of the old guard have chosen to go elsewhere - they added a good deal of wit and humour.I'm all for a lively and interesting debate. I don't think that everyone understands the difference, and I'm happy to see the back of those who think that throwing their weight around and making personal attacks is an intelligent form of communication.Apologies to newer members who have no idea what this is all about. I was as bemused as you may be when I discovered that some use the internet to indulge in virtual playground bullying. No doubt examples will follow .......
Thanks to your help, the photo and inscription are now to be seen at http://camp59survivors.wordpress.com/That should take you straight to it, but otherwise click on November 2009
I thought about then rejected a pellet boiler because of the difficulty in ensuring a dry storage area for the pellets. As I understand it, you'll need a lorralorra pellets and buying them by the bag isn't the most cost effective way of doing it.However, you may well be more advanced in Tuscany than we are in Marche, so I'm not saying "don't do it", more asking how you've overcome that particular issue
Good Luck Tom, and use this site for any questions, however dumb they may seem - the stupid question often gets the best information. I would certainly second Russ's suggestion that you come over to Italy. Getting a feel for the country really helps. And sounds like Russ's would be a good place to stay!
I wonder Nigel if your ex-sindaco was talking about one of these:http://msmtrust.org.uk/home/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=31Not sure if this one actually passed through Roccacasale but as you see they do a walk most years and they do vary a bit...
No, I'd be interested if you can find out about it. Thanks Nigel
Thanks Nigel - and I've tracked down a copy of the book that is referred to "The Way Out" by S African Uys Krige - PoW for 2 years in Abruzzo
Very helpful - and I'm glad that you agree that I was at least on the right track
