I'm planning my route down for a months visit in July. I travel through Switzerland as its a convenient route to the Lake Maggiore/Lake Orta area.

I logged on this morning to my local webcam, to look at the snow on the ski slopes. [When I'm in UK I like to see something of what its like at my place in the hills]

I have just got back from my latest trip to Italy, and thought some of you might be interested to hear about a Swiss hotel that we stayed in on the way down.

For many years now I have used the likes of 'mappy', 'via michelin' etc for calculating different routes down to Italy - for us its a part of our holiday, so we don't always want to take the quickest/shortest route down.  We prefer to vary t

I've just driven down and back for a [much too] short holiday, and feel that an update on how fuel prices look on the way down would be useful to fellow travellers

I don't think you necessarily need to non-stop  through France on the way to italy, only on the way back to the UK to avoid quarantine.

Don't think there are any restrictions on entry into italy from France or Switzerland

If things stay as they are now, you can avoid quarantine by staying out of France.   If you drive from Switzerland into Germany, and up to Aachen on the German/Belgium border.  From there it is less than 4 hrs non-stop drive to Calais across Belgium.  By non-stopping, you don't have to quarantine on your return.  It only adds about 2 hrs to the total journey time,  and about 120 miles to the overall distance.i

Mergozzo is a beautiful place.

Have given up hope of getting to Italy this year.

Will keep you updated on changes.

(The Aachen route only adds 120 miles/2hrs to the trip back according to Via Michelin)

Has another look at the map.

If you drive through Germany as far as Aachan, you only have a 3.5 hour trip (about 210 miles) across France to Calais.  A pretty easy non-stop trip.

If you drive through Switzerland (Gotthard tunnel) and into Germany (my Lorrach route) and up through Germany to Strasbourg, you could fill up with petrol and food in Germany just before entering France near Strasbourg.  In theory, you could drive non stop through France to Calais  and avoid the quarantine requirements. ( but no toilet stops).

380 miles approx - 6 hrs on motorway?

Good luck
