I've always liked country life and have this idea of keeping three or four chickens for eggs when we have our house.  But I can already see that there will be some vocabulary that I will need to catch up on.  So far my Italian classes have not cov

When I put petrol in the car, often the attendant will come out to do it for me, even on the self-service pump.  I would like to know how to ask him to fill the tank. Is it something like "Fa il pieno"? Thanks in advance!

Only slightly off-topic: Was it difficult to find a good lhd car in the UK?We're thinking of buying a (UK registered) lhd car here in the UK, and taking it to Italy with us when we move.  Once we have our residency, we plan to either sell it on (I'm assuming this will have to be done in the UK?) or get an Italian registration for it.L

Gala Placida said: "I would be very careful with body language in Italy as Italians have their own codes. Your hand or a finger under your chin, particularly if you move them backwards and forwards may mean "me ne frego" which translates as "I don't give a damn" http://italian.about.com/library/nosearch/blgestures026.htm"  I spent some years on the East Coast of the US - I've seen that one!  I hope my gesture is not offensive.  At least no one has recoiled in horror so far.

Thanks for all this.  It will help my pitiful former attemps, supplemented with my hand held flat under my chin to indicate full up!

Thank you for the link - the catalogue is fantastic!  I had to start here: http://www.margheriti.it/, since the site wouldn't let me further in until I had registered.  Lovely photos, too.

Thanks for this, Valentina!  Your explanation makes it much clearer.  And thank you for the exercises - it really helps me when I can practice what I'm learning. (And I feel slightly better to know that others have struggled with this too!) L
