Is there any kind of standard tariff of charges for the work a geometra does? Or is it just a free for all and they can charge whatever the market will bear / they can get away with?
German friends of mine have had some building work done and they have asked for a receipt for this to give to their accountant in Germany so they can claim these expenses against eventual rental income.
Regarding leases on rented accommodation:1. Is it usually the case that rental leases are either 18 months or 4 years? Is it possible to have a different term, say one year?

Marito is an extremely keen gardener and so we have an abundance of fruit and vegetables. I would therefore welcome any pointers to websites, books or just ideas about how to preserve / conserve / dry / pickle / ferment produce.

I hope this forum is still active. I find it interesting and better than those which may be more active but aren't worth reading due to being meaningless, offensive or worse. So just to inject a bit of energy into this - Berlusconi wins confidence vote, eh? Rome burning through spread of "Occupy" movement... Vendemmia just about finished around here (NW Sardinia). Warm enough to swim here today but only foreigners from the colder climes would contemplate this. Sea an amazing deep blue and the mountains up the coast crystalline in the clear air... ahhhh. Went to a little known sacred well this afternoon.
I have seen reference to a more lenient take on residency requirements and healthcare after age 65 for UK citizens settling in Italy (as Fillide mentions above) but I have found it difficult to find out exactly what these are. Anyone able to shed light on this? Thanks.
I would just like to thank you who have responded for your excellent and informative answers - very helpful.
I find this site consistently interesting and I like that there are not 100 new posts every time I log in like there might be on more 'lively' sites. I could not keep up and could feel alienated, especially as sometimes sites with lots of contributions include many somewhat unkind anonymous postings, but then maybe I prefer an older style way of doing things! I would be sad if this site folded. Not totally sure why people are predicting its demise.
Not meaning to be funny, but as a relatively new user, what did 'admin' used to do that we should miss them? I like reading what the rank and file have to say and did not know that there was a 'higher echelon' of management who have gone. As for slowness of loading... I just switch to another window to pass the time. Or maybe look out the actual window! Piano piano is a motto one needs to adapt in this area anyway.
I started to clearly say to people - do not rely on a SatNav, those who do may end up lost, use my written directions which I attach here/enclose and do remember to bring these instructions with you. Once I did that there were no more problems!
Does this make you think you should get one for your guests?
The account is with LloydsTSB - on the Isle of Man. We do not want to underdeclare and know that this is illegal. I would guess the biggest issue with an electronic bank transfer is how to synchronize the signing of the rogito with the transfer of the money. In the UK this is done through the solicitor's escrow account I believe. But I understand no such thing exists in Italy. So I guess the biggest drawback is there could be a situation where the atto is completed before the money is transferred so the buyer stops the transfer and still has the house. Or that the money is transferred and then the vendor refuses to sign the atto and keeps the house and the money. Is this correct?
Thanks for all your responses on this. One further question - is it possible legally and practically for the monetary transaction for the purchase to be made by an electronic transfer from our UK offshore euro account direct to the vendor's Italian account?
What I meant to ask is: Is it possible to pay for a house purchase in Italy using a bankers draft in euros, drawn on an offshore bank - in this case LloydsTSB located on the Isle of Man. We are not overly keen in transferring the money to Unicredit right now...
