We would love to spend some time this coming winter in south Italy but based on our previous experience don't think we can afford it.

In France and Spain probably in other EU countries too they take the view that as there is free movement throughout the EU then the old rule of 183 days does not apply. You can live much of the year in France and still be a UK resident for tax and social security purposes. You cannot, of course, then claim benefits or enter the French medical scheme and your house is considered as a second home and does not have exemption from Capital Gains Tax. Any income in France would need to be declared to UK tax authorities.

AND I would just like to point out that, being from Yorkshire I don't actually speak fluent English either so why pretend to be 'somert' you are not? My neighbours like me, I like them. Jobs a gud un! In Italy and even in Yorkshire most educated people from regions also speak  the 'proper' language. Locals tend to exaggerate the difficulties.

There are loads on ebay for a few pounds. The latest debate among the hoop jumpers in France is if the NF on the kits is going to be acceptable as it seems that the guidelines show only certain ones to be so.indecision

There is much talk on French expat forums about it. It is not due to costs but just a bit of job and bureaucracy creation. If you are stopped and breathalysed it will still be with a police kit. Having your own kit means that the defence of not being aware or of claiming spiked drinks is not likely to be valid. When they made it a legal requirement to use headlights in rain some years ago I was driving on the N10 south of Chartres and the flics had pulled in scores of cars for the offence, all were French.

That is the fine for not having one. Same as not having a bell on your bike. Foreigners will be exempt for some time. Not an official pronouncement but based on previous experience of French introduced regulations.

It is the terms of grammar which most people normally don't know not the usage. Michel Thomas teaches grammar without using the terms. The Latin way of using the present tense where we would use the perfect tense is part of the learning. Da quanto tempo sei in Italia      How long have you been in Italy This is an anomaly as the tenses usually are the same.

La Dolcevita, Rather than going to Sky you should buy a simple cheap receiver and dish and point at Hotbird. As far as I can see almost half the hundreds of free channels there are Italian. Loads of regional channels and news channels plus all the dubbed soaps and American series , everything really

You can download his lessons from file sharing. He does many languages but his method is good and repeats sentence structure not so much on vocabulary. I used his lessons in the car when driving down to Italy the first time and was pretty good by the time I arrived. In fairness I already spoke Spanish, Portuguese and French but you still have to learn each language and the differences as well as similarities.

This comes up a lot in Euro forums and it seems that these rules about being self sufficient are old rules and nobody seems to know of cases where a European citizen has been kicked out of another EU country because they couldn't show they had enough money. There are those who own properties in France and Spain who do not have sufficient income to comply with the rules.
