We have finally been told that we have planning permission to add a small extension of 25sqm and pool 10x6.  We are just waiting for the official document to be sent from the Regione when the town hall fees become payable, which I am told are in t

We own a trulli which is currently used as a holiday home.  It has been totally renovated and to protect it from damp we have where possible dug insulation trenches around the outer walls as well as put in french drains.

Our property in Italy, the house and land have always been a place of creativity and inspiration. Artists and writers have found that they often perform beyond their accepted level of ability and produced some fantastic work.  Maybe it is the sere

Water for our property is collected from our roof in a stone cisterna, so it is only used for washing, flushing loos etc.  To improve the quality of the water I have added Amuchina soluzione disinfettante (very much like Milton), which works well.

I have to admit that I have never been interested in gardening and hence have little or no knowledge.  Fortunately mother nature is excellent at producing the most wonderful array of wild flowers in our small olive grove but of couse by late June

Thanks for the advice, so November pruning here we come.  As we are going to tackle only half the trees (approx 35) and ar only going for a light prune can anyone recommend the best tools as a chain saw would be too heavy but I was wondering if one of those electric powered mini chain saws on a pole were any good or would I be better advised to get a ladder and a good pair of loppers?

Here is a sample of the size of tree although these are the biggest and there are quite a few smaller ones.

Along with many others only about 10% of our trees are worth harvesting and it is probably not worth it as we may struggle to get enough for our own pressing.  As we have already organised an olive harvest trip (mid November) with extra pairs of hands I was wondering whether it wasa wise to turn it into a pruning trip.  They have not been pruned for 3 years so need it.  I have just read the excellent guide that Gala posted and it says that pruning can take place when the harvest is finished but conversly it says that pruning should be avoided in areas prone to frost - we are at 400m. So is pruning in November too early or should we come back in Feb?  Also as our trees are either side of a small dip (small valley), I was thinking it would be smart to prune just one side this year and the other side next.  As you can tell we are complete novices at this so would welcome any guidance.

If you just need e-mails then Blackberry is the way to go.  E-mails sent and recieved abroad cost nothing extra beyond our £5 a month subscription we pay for use of the service in the UK.  If we want Internet we just wait until we hit a town and use free WiFi again on the Blackberrys although we also pack a notebook for the convenience of a bigger screen/

You can have drinking water with a cisterna - here is the type of thing you need.http://www.easyh2o.co.uk/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=82Mind you I go a bit OTT with making sure the water is OK and treat the water so that it is better than UK drinking water standards (don't have the data for Italian water). So basically I have cut out the middle man - the water company

One of the benefits of living in the South is that it has taught us to respect and appreciate what a valuable resource water is.  With two large cisterni we are pretty much self sufficient and it is qute a good feeling to  no longer be controlled by inefficeint water companies.

Always difficult.  I think you need to get to know your neighbours and learning the language with them will help to identify what interests them.  Whilst they can be suspicious of new foods taking 'biscoti Inglese' to share over a cup of coffee is always well received - they will always try them and conclude that 'biscoti Italiano' are the best!  All good fun.  The older generation of our next door neighbours have a very active interest in the royal family so that makes it easy to buy for them.  They are of course all avid cooks so we have personalised some aprons for them by embroidering their names.  Also some of the younger ones are studying English, so we have helped them with some books and tuition.  We also noticed that they have a lot of china ornaments so we have given them china depicting where we live in the UK - the sort of thing you get from tourist attractions - we live on the south coast so they have had pieces from Battle Abbey & Brighton Pavillion so far.  Anyway hopefully this list may give you some ideas.

Hi AlanI know I warned you about the problems from Lille to Dunkirk and you asked whether it was on both carriageways, which I could not answer - I assume from your comments that the problems are on both.  Perhaps you could confirm. Thanks

Don't know about Ryanair but just booked a bike on Easyjet for my son £18.50 each way - BUT -  it had to be in a bike box or bag and that is where the cost is from £50 to £200. This is the one my son has bought http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/dhb_Marsden_Wheeled_Bike_Bag_And_Wheel...

Ciao Sarah Have you looked at Vieste further North in the Gargano.  I have not been there but friends have and what you are after fits their description.  Have stayed in Gallipoli and to achieve what you are after I think you would need to stay in the old town which is surrounded by sea, but I found it a bit too touristy.  If you want somewhere in the Salento region then Otranto may well be the best bet.  I do not know enough about that town  to recommend but suggest you go to the Puglia chat forum - very helpful membership with some residents of Otranto or just outside. Good luck

I can't be sure but the Dunkirk to Lille carriageway seemed to be flowing much better but I could be mistaken as I was intent on catching a ferry.
