Hi  We need urgent information on this as we have been told what looks like rubble to us is "stabilizzante" a mix of gravel and sand to harden off and level out an area where a building has been knocked down to create a solid base....?

Hi   Has anyone any idea if the Italian Poste has the equivalent of a bankers draft and if so, are there are any limits on the amount and what is the cost...?

Anyone care to hazard a guess at the current cost to have an old(ish) 250sqm house rewired? Also do you know if they do low level voltage lighting?

We are unsure about moving articles over there as opposed to buying when we get there, but know it will likely cost more to buy over there and be more hassle. So we want to get an idea of the cost of moving some of our stuff out there?

We are here in Abruzzo now and are thinking about privately buying a car. We have been told we need a notario to buy, is that correct? If this is the case does anyone have any idea of the likely cost?

Very interesting Ugo, and there is nothing wrong with living in the South - Abruzzo winklaughHowever, your English pension still has to be over £22000 per year before you pay less tax in Italy - as always - only for the rich!

Technically you should be applying for residency in Italy after 90 days (before if you wish), to do so, and be accepted, in the circumstances you describe (early retirement) you will likely need health insurance which has to be acceptable to the comune you are applying for residency. Staying more than 182 days in a tax year (Jan-Dec in Italy) you could become “tax resident” and liable for tax in Italy (at a much greater rate than the UK). Search here and other forums for “residency” and/or “tax in Italy” for more information. Some areas allow paying INPS for health cover and it's often cheaper, but it is not a requirement to do so.

Well, everyone is different and some repellents that work for some do not for others. I’ve heard a number of doctors say better the deet than some of the things you can get via mozzies or ticks. But have a look at this treehugger page regards picaridin and you decide. Autan tropical (spray pump, not gas spray which just breaks) used to contain picaridin (not too sure it does now) and worked for the OH. It was rare I was bitten or I just don’t react to them… A couple of other things to note; you need to know what you are up against i.e. there are ordinary mosquito’s and tiger in Italy. The latter are out 24/7 and to my mind much more of a pest for the OH. Another is that mozzies are poor at flying, so sitting in an area with a breeze higher up will help or something like a little battery fan to blow them away. Lastly, and this is harder as they breed in a tiny amount of water, pots with a base is a breeding ground as is any other water. In their life time they only live in a 100-200m area, so not too far around to check out winkYou can buy Autan in supermarkets around us or on Amazon.it, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de . The latter is probably the cheapest, but delivery may be too much. It's not cheap, so perhaps a single bottle to start with to see if it works. We used to get it in packs of 5-6 from amazon.co.uk, but it has shot up in price there.

Chat is a good idea, I used this for Telecom (TIM now) and asked (in English) "do you have someone that speaks English, sad I know, but I got someone and what I wanted.

I’m sure there was a way of getting into an area to put in a foreign number, but I can’t recall ever getting it to work, seem to remember it failed. Of course this was a long time back and not possible to look at now. However I would add, an awful lot of things will eventually need a mobile, as is the case now in the UK. This will only be more so as there is new EU law coming in this year whereby finance has to have secondary confirmation i.e. more or less forcing 2FA (two factor authentication). So it may be better to get yourself a cheap mobile in Italy or an unlocked mobile with an Italian sim. Certainly TIM were still doing a PAYG sim, and WIND last I looked. I still have my TIM PAYG sim and top-up once every 10 month to stop it expiring (even though they told me it was 11 or 12 month and extended if it was used). I picked up a cheap (<€25) Samsung at the big supermarket in Italy, but you can get an unlocked mobile in the likes of the UK quite cheap. So a one off cost and a few Euro a year, and you can use the mobile to call up you pizza when in Italy!

The link Ugo provides is spot on and I gather you have always been supposed to exchange. From what I read a while back the UK has said after brexit it will accpet an EU licence for exchange regardless of how we leave, don't think it is the same for the EU. So, if you are living in Italy and change you could come back to the UK and change back.
