Hi  We need urgent information on this as we have been told what looks like rubble to us is "stabilizzante" a mix of gravel and sand to harden off and level out an area where a building has been knocked down to create a solid base....?

Hi   Has anyone any idea if the Italian Poste has the equivalent of a bankers draft and if so, are there are any limits on the amount and what is the cost...?

Anyone care to hazard a guess at the current cost to have an old(ish) 250sqm house rewired? Also do you know if they do low level voltage lighting?

We are unsure about moving articles over there as opposed to buying when we get there, but know it will likely cost more to buy over there and be more hassle. So we want to get an idea of the cost of moving some of our stuff out there?

We are here in Abruzzo now and are thinking about privately buying a car. We have been told we need a notario to buy, is that correct? If this is the case does anyone have any idea of the likely cost?

.... they decode your surname and first name to a CF on the fly and compare it with the CF you enter? Interesting, but this may also be a problem in as much as you never know what was put in by the person inputting you details to provide you with the CF for example if you give a name like "John James" to an Italian official (well even to me for that matter).  Perhaps people should use the on-line CF generator to validate exactly what was used for their original CF, I'm sure there was a link to it here on the forum.

... but yes you CAN pay there by direct debit, see here http://www.abruzzolutely.com/forum/Blah.pl?m-1272831300/s-3/highlight-poste/#num3 You can also see your account online - see link in above post   :)

.. to point things out, then people can look to see where their particular circumstances fit in. If the OP is not actually working and has little or no tax liabilities (well of course we all do have some), then it might suit them, just a possibility. From what I've read on here, would it not be the case you would qualify for health care there in Italy in any case after 5 years? It's funny that in both countries we seem to being forced down the road of having a "commercialisa" (I'm guessing equivalent to an accountant) just to fill in forms and charge a fortune! :)

... did not realise there was a tax expert on site   :) Ok the OP said "lock up his house in the UK" , I did not spot the "permanently living" bit, but if you have a look around at the HMRC site (no I wouldn't recommend it either), if you retain a house in the UK you still can be liable for UK tax (ditto pay NI), apart from which I doubt they would care if you pay... Anyway the point is nothing to do with TAX Ram, it's a POSSIBLE suggestion for cheap medical cover..... :)

I just checked this address from the DVLA web site on Royal Mail site Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency Administrative Mail & Driving Licence Enquiries  Longview Road  Clase SWANSEA SA6 7JL It is there under the post code. But note they have a DIFFERENT post code for different parts e.g.  Vehicle Customer Services (VCS) DVLA Swansea SA99 1AR

because big government sites like DVLA DON'T come up in the UK Post Office address book. Now if these "clever" Italian people used something like the royal mail post code address finder it may not come up as a valid address. I've posted several special delivery items to government sites and on most occasions the Post Offices here in the UK CANNOT find the post code on their system? Just a guess, but I wonder what they would have done if you had left off the post code - the same perhaps!!! If this was the problem, then the UK is really at fault as they need to get this sorted... all these post codes should be on their database. Of course when I sent my letters here the UK Post Offices on not finding the post code told me NO PROBLEMo and just sent it off anyway - and they duly arrived where they should :)

but I guess you know yours is? Anyway I've grown one here in the North East of England on a South facing wall for 3-4 years now, but this winter is the first where we've had what I would call a normal winter!!! The prolonged cold spells and -15 took its toll and the 15' plant is down to 4' and not a leaf to be seen (it kept lots over winter the other years). I've also had one in a pot for 2-3 years, but this one has never flowered and has been very poor in growth. Both are the same type (non-edible) and are hardier for up North, but I think, well at least here, you need them planted in the ground with the root system covered by stone to protect them from extreme heat or cold. The flowers differ on various types, but we love the holy trinity type, simply because it looks beautiful... Yes the flowers only last a day or so, but they don't all come out at the same time, we get flowers each day for months on end. Sadly this year I think we will be lucky if it manages to survive, but believe it will as it has tiny, tiny buds showing.

Auto-europe may well use Autoeuropa (Sicily by car) because they are really like a broker and supposedly get you the best deal. We used Auto-europe recently and got the car from Sicily by Car (which at Pescara turned out to be the Autoeuropa desk). The 1st car we got was a clapped out Micra, so many scratches it would take days to check out. Still it was late so we took it as is... It got us where we were going 45 minutes up the motorway, then on arrival the ABS came up as failing. We called it in and they sent a pick-up truck to take the car and US back to the airport. We are a little new to this game, but we did wonder why they had not just brought a replacement car. Anyway they upgraded us to a nice Bravo, however this is a bit big for tight little streets... They then charged us almost £400 on our credit card a week or so after our return for a bump in the boot door. They did not tell us about this or provide anything until we chased it through Auto-Europe (who were very good by the way). They then sent a registered letter with pictures... They never even checked the car on it's return, so how they could say it was done by us we don't know.  However by the same token, we could never really argue it was not us...  I agree Hertz via Ryan Air is cheap....

an E106 if you are not on UK benefit.... This is an extract from an NHS site (note it's dwp you need to get the form from   If you move to an EEA country to live but not work and don't receive a UK benefit, you may be eligible for up to two-and-a-half years of state healthcare, paid for by the UK. You will need to apply for an E106 with the the Overseas Healthcare Team (Newcastle) and prove that you have worked in the UK and paid National Insurance contributions up to three years before your departure. For further advice, contact the Overseas Healthcare Team (Newcastle) Overseas Healthcare Team (Newcastle) Room TC001 Tyneview Park Whitley Road Newcastle upon Tyne NE98 1BA Tel: 0191 218 1999 (Monday to Friday 8am-5pm) The E106 will entitle you to treatment on the same basis as a resident of the country you moving to. This may mean that you have to make a patient contribution to the cost of your care. When the cover on the E106 expires, you cannot get any further medical cover from the UK until you are in receipt of a UK state pension. It is up to the country’s authorities to decided whether you are eligible to join their healthcare scheme.  You will also be entitled to a UK-issued EHIC, allowing you to visit other EEA countries besides the one your are a resident with. Not too sure If this is allowed :) but I guess you could claim to be self employed when the E106 runs out and pay UK self employed NI, which would be cheaper than private health care. The current cost of paying is £2.40 per week, a lot cheaper I would guess - see here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/moneytaxandbenefits/taxes/workingandpayingtax/dg_10016920  This only applies if you are NOT getting UK benefit. If you are over pension age and in receipt (note state pension), then it's an E121 you need from the same people...
