I purchased a `TIM` SIM card this summer, which works well. I have credit left on the card.I will be in England for the next six months and I have been told that, if I do not use my mobile, the card will be cancelled or will expire, even though I have bought unused credit.I will be grateful if anyone can tell me whether what I have been told is correct and, if so, how often must I use the phone in the UK, as this is going to be expensive.  I wish that I could come out to Italy again sooner, but this is impossible. Thanks for any help

This used to be the case a couple of years ago but not anymore I believe. What you do have to do is to make at least one top-up in a 12 month period. This only has to be for the minimum amount. I've mobiles with both TIM and Vodafone. Did'nt top up my Vodafone for over a year and the sim was cancelled. Was, however, credited with the outstanding balance to a new sim card.

Thanks for the information.  I find that the TIM card gives me an O2 signal in the UK, so I could try a call if I am not back in Italy within 6 months.I have had a number of Thai SIM cards over the years, which do not seem to function at all over here and they die if unused after quite a short period, but they are very cheap to replace, so it is only the loss of the number that is a nuisance.

We usually make sure that we text our Italian friend every now and again when we are back in England to make sure that our credit stays on our Italian mobile. It is a "Wind" sim rather than a "Tim" one, but we think it works the same way in respect of keeping our credit instead of losing it all.

we have had same SIM cards for a number of years.  They just need to be topped off (credit added), once per year.  Phone will work to receive calls 12 months from last credit and can make outgoing up to 13 months - so you  can top off.regards,
