Submitted by Santamarinese on Wed, 11/18/2009 - 03:21Hi LeslieYes you were looking in the right place. We have sent it again, but it is not showing up this end, so you may not have received the second one either. Do you want to try sending a PM to us and we will try replying to it instead. There must be a glitch in the system somewhere.John & Toni

I checked my "all messages" again and nothing from John and Toni. I will try sending on to them and see if they can reply. Puzzling! But yes I am looking for the mild climates but wanting desperately to be in Italy. I have lived with tough winters and snow up past the arm pits most of my life! Want to be finished with that. Thank you all for welcoming me and good wishes. Hope I can contribute to this community!
Welcome Leslie

Hello Leslie and welcome, I live in the UK at the moment hoping to move to my house in Paestum which is aprox 30kms south of Salerno early next year and would certainly reccomend the area and its people who I have found to be extremely friendly and helpfull. The climate is wonderfull and the cost of living quite reasonable. There are plenty of propertys for sale to suit all budgets particurlaly in the coastal areas around Salerno.Salerno itself however can be quite pricey but a beautifull City.

Ohhh yes....Paestum. That was also on my list to check out this coming June. Seemed like a great place to investigate as I understand there are many Greek influences in the Paestum area. Greek - Italian great combination! My father is Greek and my mother Italian. I am glad to hear from you on this. The reinforcement only adds to my anticipation and excitement! Thank you.

We bought an apartment in Vasto (CH) in Abruzzo north of Bari on the coast. It won't be finished until next March (it's new construction) and we can't wait. Vasto is a nice size city (40,000 people) with a great medieval history and an old wall and castle, great shops and restaurants, and a lot to see. It sits on a hill above some of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic, and from our balcony we have a view of about 10 miles of the coast. Real estate prices were reasonable, and the food is great and also not expensive (as long as the dollar doesn't go down much more against the euro). We also love the Salerno and Amalfi coast area, but I think you'll find it much more expensive, and, in the summer especially, much more hectic.Good luck on your search.
Id suggest Sicily, but then

Thank you for the suggestion! I guess maybe I am wary of the "southern most" islands. Me, the naive American who has maybe read too many books, seen too many movies, heard too many stories???? I have even had northern Italians tell me, "you go south of Naples and no one hears from you again"!!!!! Guess I will have to go explore there some time and see for myself.
East Coast

I am only familiar with the east coast as a tourist as I have only spent a few days there but I found the people warm and friendly as they are are all over Italy. As for Paestum yes you are right this area was a Greek colony known as Magna Grecia and there some amazing ruins of Greek?Roman temples which attract tourists from all over the World there is also a magnificent Museum which houses many escavated artifacts

South vs. North
Submitted by Leslie on Mon, 12/07/2009 - 18:44Thanks Bagni! Yes I suspected a little rivalry going on with regards to North and South. Thanks for the feedback. I know I could deal with rain but soooo very tired of shoveling 6 inches of snow every couple of days. And the snow boots and the down jackets and gloves.....The older I get the more difficult to do. Umbrellas are so much easier!
Hi Leslie I have a home

Hi Leslie I have a home near Cassino, between Rome and Naples but cannot move over full time just yet as I am in the process of selling my business in the UK. Daily I look at the weather forecast for my area and just cannot wait to get out of the very damp (daily rain) and cold English weather to a milder climate in Italy. Yes it does get cold in the winter over there and yes, it does rain (and boy, when it rains in the mountains it rains) and yes, there is snow (although not normally at the level our house is thank goodness. But it is all so very beautiful with clear, clean air, wonderful light (even on a dull day) and far, far better than the northeast of England weather wise. Look on http://meteo.ansa.it/Regione.asp?Regione=4&Comune=065116 and type in the town you want to know about, press 'vai' and you will see the weather for the next five days. It is in centigrade though. I wish you luck with your dreams for next year and your retirement. Maralyn
Maralyn, thank you for

Maralyn, thank you for your words. I love hearing about different areas in the South. It is so good to hear of the clean clear air. That is one of the benefits of where I am right now. We have crystal clear air here. The town in this valley do not allow bright lights at night for the "night sky ordinance". The millions of stars are breath taking especially in the clear air. Elevation is 1600 m aprox. if I calculate correct. But clear air and no snow sounds marvelous. Thank you again and I will put Cassino on my list to explore! B-)
Leslie Cassino is

Leslie Cassino is certainly a worth a visit. It is not only in a stunning mountainous area but the WWII battles make it a very interesting historic place. Cassino town was designed (in the American grid form) and paid for by the US government as it was totally destroyed during the war. The Monte Cassino Abbey has been rebuilt on top of the mountain in exactly the same way it was prior to the war and again is a stunning place to visit. You would never believe it is only about 50 years old as it looks hundreds of years old and has been rebuilt using old stone and some of the treasures that were hidden during the war. The surrounding villages, mostly old and clinging to the sides of the mountains typical Italian style, all seem to have a story to tell including the one I live in. I don't think you would be disappointed in this area if you visit. I live about 20ks outside of Cassino in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am to own a house there in such a beautiful part of the world and cannot wait until the day I go there for a longer period than a few weeks holiday. Maralyn
