None are great choices. MOst are definitely not cycle friendly as they are very hilly. Southern town are not pedestrian friendly either. Transport in the south is pretty dire - bus services are good but trains much less so. The only real transport hub is Naples - which is great or terrible depending on your point of view. Potenza is cold in the winter - its very high, Benevento isnt much better.

I agree. Choosing a town in the southern area is not going to be easy. Of course we are looking at costs which is the worst part. Sorrento would definately be my first choice even though it is not central but utilities and rent are high. Not thrilled about the thought of Naples (my point of view).Still, we have to find something with transportation as we are not planning on getting a car. Hope others might have some ideas.

I completly understand what you are saying. We are trying to pick a location further south so it wouldn't be as expensive to venture out and explore. Our original thought was to choose three locations (north, central, south) and spend 4 months in each. We figured that might be too much moving around.We are just trying to find a central "southern" location so we can call it a home base and explore from there. I hope that makes sense.

This way after a year, we will have a better idea where we want to set our roots - if indeed we decide to stay (which we are sure we will!!)

The city that fits your description is Lucca. Everybody rides a bicycle, the historic centre is pedestrian...and gorgeous and it has great communications. Plus it is a town with character and history. Pisa or Florence airports are close (less than 1 hour away), train takes you everywhere and Florence, Pisa, Volterra, Sienna, the Cinque Terre, Assisi, Gubbio, Todi, The Versilia, Bologna, Modena.... And even Portofino are day trips.....

If you were staying in Parma you could pretty much take a look at Lucca, a truly beautiful city. But, wherever we go in Italy we're bowled over by its beauty, including the places Gala mentioned. I suspect a person could spend a lifetime travelling round Italy and still want more.
