New rules on cash

'Tourists' in ITaly have now got a deroga from the government allowing them to buy stuff that costs more than 1000 euros with cash. Because the cash rich Russian holidaymakets only carry cash, the govt has decided that if you want to buy something that costs more than a grand including IVA, as a non resident you can now buy it with cash showing your passport. It must be photocopied and registered by the vendor. Happy shopping!

and I'm sure the vendor will be only too happy to let you comply with this edict. That will be a lot of tax that goes missing from the Italian Treasury, if I know anything about cash transactions and back pockets...

You've gotta love the 'laws' in this country!!! I heard that jewellers were practically going out of business over this as the men couldn't buy their lovers jewellery without having to give their Codice Fiscale! Cue the much photocopied Russian passports being used then :-)
