My driving license is a UK one and is about to expire. I thought I would just renew it though the DVLA as this seemed the most simplest way but I was wrong. I don't have a house in the UK, I do not live there and they also ask for a current utility bill!! Therefore I opted for conversion of my UK license to an Italian one. After paying 80 Euros for the Doctor to check my eyesight and for the new license, I was informed that I might not get the same entitlement to drive the different categories of vehicles I am currently entitled to!! I passed my driving test in 1985 and consequently I am entitled to drive vehicles in catagories B, BE, C1, C1E, D1 and D1E. Does anyone know if the Italian equivalent to these catagories will be on my new license. The temporary license states that they will 'conversione della patente di guida della categoria D/E'. I am not sure what category D or E is. What I am told is that category B is for normal cars!. If anyone can enlighten me I would appreciate it before my news license turns up in 2 or 3 weeks time!!!

You should get this one - Patente B: it allows you to drive any car, small trucks up to 3.5tonnes, vehicles carrying up to eight passengers, tractors and motorcycles under 125cc.  You can tow a trailer if the car is heavier than the trailer (but beware - there are rules not related to the driving licence about trailers).  Basically the categories are now the same as in the UK. I don't think the Italians have any equivalent of an 'automatic car only' licence, and if you had one of these it could create problems. If you had a full bike licence (A) in the UK you've probably lost it. This is a common occurrence when changing to an Italian one unless you are very clear when you make your application. Here's a link to the catergorys - (obviously you don't have to pass a test if converting from a UK or EU licence.) http://www.lapatenteonline.com/webportal/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=24

You passed your driving test on a car before 1 Jan 97.  At that time, passing a car test allowed you to tow a trailer E, drive a minibus D1, and drive a small truck between 3.5t and 7.5t - C1. If you took your licence today, you would only get B and the other categories would need additional training and tests.  In UK, the 'grandfather' rights allow you to continue to have these categories.  I do not know the Italian licence rules and it possible you will lose these categories and entitlements. Although not strictly legal, it is not uncommon to put your licence at a family member address.
