Thanks Gala - have spent most of the last 2 weeks weeding and really don't ever use any weed killers. Will give the boiling water tip a go!It is a constant battle with them but the fireflies should be arriving soon so it will be all worth while (have heard they will not survive anywhere when weed killers have been used - not sure if this is true?)

Chemical weed killers are very dangerous and they do affect both animals and plants. They also disturb the soil's balance. I personally try to avoid them. With weeds, it is most important to try to pull them out as soon as they appear without giving them a chance to develop a strong root system or to produce seeds. The boiling water will destroy some nutrients in the area where it has been poured, but it does not cause long-lasting damage to the soil as it would recover in a few days. It does not leave traces.

 Hmmmmm. I like the idea as I'm never keen on using herbicides etc nearfood we want to eat. The only fly in the ointment (so to speak) is that over on my Orto we have no power and unless I do a passable imitation of Usain Bolt with a hot kettle in my hand, the boiling water option is not feasable. Maybe I'll try a Caustic Soda mix, that should work ??

Gromit, it would be better to use a thermos flask, but make sure it keeps the right temperature. Otherwise, have a camp fire or one of those camping burners with a kettle boiling on site. Never run with a kettle full of boiling water. As for Caustic Soda.... you are really dangerous.... :O

The camp fire idea seems favourite, as I'm always burning cuttings and strimming debris; quite nice to have a brew aswell. Oh, and I am a qualified Health & Safety Instructor so I do realise the (tongue in cheek) reference to running with boiling water was probably aimed at our pre school readers. However Caustic Soda, used in recomended dosage, is effective on stubourn weedy growths ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. 0:)
