Sick onions

Any ideas.  This year we have grown red and white onions side by side in the 'orto'.  The white ones are fantastic, but at least half the red ones are slowly decaying, rotting away from the inside out.  Cannot see any sign of creepees.  Help, dont want this to happen again.

Hi. could we be talking Neck Rot?here in the UK our crop is good except for the neck being damp. so we put them upside down to drain and dry off either in the sun or inside when it`s wet. hopefully it will do the trick. Usually you would leave them on the ground to dry in the sun., something we have little of here! Will be interested in other replies.

.. not many problems with onions, so if when dug up the base and roots have gone or are damaged then white rot would be the cause.... They say move your onion bed.... as for the white being ok, perhaps the variety are more resistant OR it just has not spread.... If you confirm it as this, then you should burn the infected plant parts.... Of course if you can any of the bulb is ok, it can be ate, but don't try to store.... You can of course freeze sliced onion if you so wish....
