Cinema tax breaks restored

Parliament on Monday restored tax breaks for the Italian movie industry whose removal from budget plans sparked an unpredecented threat of a festival boycott.

The House budget committee approved tax credits and tax shelters amounting to some 17 million euros this year and almost 67 million for both 2009 and 2010.

The norms are the same as those introduced in the last budget of centre-left premier Romano Prodi but initially removed from the first budget of centre-right Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Italian movie producers and directors are now expected to call off their threatened boycott of festivals in Venice, Rome and Turin.
