An estimated five million cars are expected to hit Italy's motorways during this coming weekend's Ferragosto holiday marking the Feast of the Assumption.
Autostrade, the company which operates Italy's toll roads, said on Tuesday that highway traffic will peak between 2pm and 10pm Sunday, when those returning from a long weekend break with be joined by holiday goers who took the first half of the month off and are now heading home.
The situation on the roads will be complicated in the north with the arrival of bad weathers over the central-north.
In order to make highway travel easier, Autostrade suggested that motorists to plan their departures ahead, monitor traffic reports and make sure their vehicles are in shape for the trip, especially the tires.
