Italian Admiral Giovanni Gumiero is leading the new NATO task force against Somali pirates.
Seven ships from six countries - Italy, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Britain and the United States - make up the force.
Some 60 vessels have been hijacked by pirates in Somali waters this year.
As well as hunting for pirates, the task force will escort cargo ships from the World Food Programme.
