Two Italian journalists were detained for three hours after speaking to Tibetan monks about a recent protest on Tibet in the northern Chinese province of Qinghai.

The journalists, from Italian news agency ANSA and Italian satellite news channel Sky TG24, were not identified.

Police did not explain why they were held.

Before being detained, the journalists spoke to monks at a Buddhist monastery who said more than 100 monks were arrested during recent celebrations of the Tibetan New Year and they expected more to follow on Tuesday, the 50th anniversary of the failed Tibetan uprising that saw the Dalai Lama flee to India.

Elsewhere in the ethnically Tibetan province of Qinghai two home-made bombs hit two police cars without hurting anyone.
